Pleasant Valley's high school social studies teacher nominated for the Star Award

Mr. Tim McCutchan, a Pleasant Valley High School social studies teacher, has been nominated for the Star Award for the program he developed on his "Constitution Wiki." His nomination was the result of his students' success in understanding the Constitution. Mr. McCutchan presented the development of the Constitution project with his students.

The Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 accepts nominations for STAR (Superior Technology Achievement Recognition) Awards to honor the outstanding integration of technology into classrooms and schools throughout Northampton, Monroe and Pike counties. Outstanding district educators receive STAR Awards for their work as teachers, administrators and technology coaches and their innovative use/support of technology to enhance student learning.Dora Tartar, Pleasant Valley School District's K-12 reading supervisor, Mr. McCutchan, Ms. Valerie Eblin-8-12 Literacy Coach and Ms. Jamie Schuler- 5-7 Literacy Coach presented an update on the grades 5-12 reading program at the PV school board meeting.Data analysis is a key factor in assessing and monitoring student achievement and reading comprehension. Benchmark testing, data analysis, instruction/intervention and progress monitoring are the steps that are followed along with the Reading Apprenticeship and Comprehension Strategies Intervention programs and data based intervention instruction which is done on a continuous basis.Mr. McCutchan showed the board how he utilized what he has learned from these programs to help his students actually enjoy learning about the Constitution.Mrs. Tartar had the opportunity to observe Mr. McCutchan in the classroom and said, "It was so exciting to see students get that excited about learning."In other business, the board approved:*Hiring of substitute support staff-Carla Varrios, secretary; Charlotte Bizousky, paraprofessional associate/monitor/secretary; Stacey Charles, paraprofessional associate/monitor/cafeteria worker; Sandra Meckes, monitor/secretary; Debra Munoz, cafeteria worker; Ann marie Parascando, PPA/monitor; Carmella Zweier, paraprofessional associate/monitor/secretary/custodian/cafeteria worker; Audrey Altemose, monitor/cafeteria worker; Barbara Ejk, paraprofessional associate/monitor.*Hiring of substitute professional staff-Nicole Borger, elementary; Aaron Fital, technology education; Katherine McCausland, elementary; Jillian Metzger, elementary/secondary counseling; Suzanne Rothwell, English; Tonia Schaeffer, elementary.*Tenure for Michele Vadelund.*Retirement-Richard Marsili, security chief, effective July 11, 2011; Anthony Palermo, security lieutenant, effective July 11, 2011.Melissa Ruschak has been named FBLA adviser, retroactive to Jan. 13, 2011.Policy revisions for

6.2.1.-6.2.1.6 were approved with one "No" vote from James Spinola.Mrs. Tartar received approval for summer school. Classes will be held for kindergarten through grade six in reading and math. Summer school will run from Tuesday, July 5-Friday, July 29. The daily sessions will be 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. for students in grades K-6 and 8:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. for instructors. All classes will be held at PVE. Fourteen instructors and fifteen instructional aides will be needed for grades K-6. Instructors will be paid $460 a week and the instructional aides will be paid $360 a week. This summer program is funded through ESEA Title 1 program.The Pleasant Valley Volleyball Parents has been approved as a school-affiliated organization.The board approved the contract to Ehrlich for vegetation management services for various locations throughout the school district for $2,841, no increase from last year.
