Summit Hill Borough Council deadlocked this week on making an appointment to the borough's Water Authority.

The council, which tabled the appointment last month, twice voted 3-3 on appointment nominations, first for Jim Yusella then for Chet Maholick.According to Purden's rules, a special meeting will have to be called and Mayor Paul McArdle will have to break the tie vote. The mayor wasn't at this week's meeting.The rules for filling a vacancy in a borough office state, "If such a tie or split vote shall occur at any meeting when the mayor is not in attendance, the matter shall be tabled to a special meeting to be held not less than five days or more than 10 days as set by the president of council, and the mayor shall be given at least five days' notice of such meeting, at which meeting it shall be the duty of the mayor to cast the tie-breaking vote."Also absent during the meeting was council member Michael Kokinda.Councilman Michael Alabovitz nominated Yusella, a professional plumber, to the position, and Bill Chapman seconded it. Siding with them was Council President Joe Weber.After the tie on the Yusella appointment, Harry Miller nominated long-time authority member Maholick to be reappointed while John O'Gurek made the second. Ken Boyd agreed with Maholick.There were several other appointments, tabled from last month, which occurred without controversy.Appointed unanimously were:• Coaldale-Lansford-Summit Hill Joint Sewer Authority - Mark Collevechio, five years.• Appeals Board - Michael J. Kulick, three years.• Civil Service Commission - Thomas Tkach, three years.• Sewage Enforcement Officer - Carl Wolfe Jr.It was noted that two or three vacancies exist on the Summit Hill Planning Commission.
