Just what the doctor ordered

His voice dominates the airwaves of Carbon County.

His face can be seen on television daily. His bobblehead is available to grace your home with its grinning visage. And now, Penn's Peak Radio personality Layne "The Doc" Roberts can spice up your favorite dishes."The Doc's sauce will have you coming back for more," Roberts said.During the July 8 edition of his "Office Party" morning show, Roberts and some special guests unveiled his two new signature sauces: Doctor's Sinfully Smokin' Barbecue and Doctor's Wicked Nectar Chipotle Pepper."It's meant to be fun and get people's attention, but it's also really good stuff," he said.Roberts first got the idea for his own condiments when his secretary, Karen Kixx, brought back a bottle of hot sauce from Sauce Crafters, a West Palm Beach, Fla.-based company. The DJ loved it so much, he invited the company's owner on his show as a guest. And what started as a jest between the two ultimately became a business venture."I told Charlie (Sauce Crafters's owner) that I should have my own brand of hot sauce," Roberts said. "He said, 'let's do some work,' and it went from there."Since November 2009, Roberts has been sampling Sauce Crafters products in a meticulous trial and error process. Last month, after much deliberation, the final formula was decided and the product was unofficially launched. In the coming weeks, the sauces will be available from a score of local retailers, including the E Z Market in Andreas, Fegley's Mini Mart, and the Covered Bridge Inn, in addition to the station's "No Peaking" website. The Normal Square Inn Restaurant and Bar on 443 in Lehighton has even created a special menu of dishes that are made using the sauces."These aren't your dollar store hot sauces," Roberts said. "They've got a rich taste, with just a little bit of spice that isn't over the top."On hand to help Roberts officially introduce his funky new flavorings was his longtime pal Nick The Nugget and his hairstylist Theresa Schweister, as well as the Cowardly Lion. The motley crew sampled the sauce on cuts of chicken and salmon provided by the kitchen staff of Roadies Restaurant and Bar."This is great stuff," Nick said. "It's not too spicy and really brings out the flavor of the meat."Already, Roberts has received positive reactions from the sauces' early purchasers, and is toying with the idea of introducing his own wing sauce in the future."We'll see what happens," he said. "If nothing else, I hope my family buys some."Roberts has been with Penn's Peak Radio since its launch in 2005, though he has been in the radio business for close to 30 years. Next May, he will be hosting the station's fifth anniversary cruise aboard the Carnival Miracle. For information about The Doc's sauces, visit
