Bids considered for elementary renovations

A contract for a $21 million renovation project to Slatington Elementary could be awarded later this month.

Northern Lehigh School Board on Monday agreed to hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. June 28 to award construction bids.Superintendent Michael Michaels said the bid opening will be at 5 p.m. June 22. A renovation meeting will be held at noon on June 25, he said.The deadline to submit the bids for the renovation project was extended after it was originally scheduled to be held June 9.The bids will be for a contract for general construction, plumbing construction, including fire protection, HVAC construction, electrical construction and asbestos abatement by owner.In addition, alternate bids for single prime general construction, as well as asbestos abatement by owner, will also be accepted at that time.In personnel issues, the board:- Agreed to employ eight elementary teachers at a stipend of $1,800 per teacher, and one Reading Specialist Supervisor at a stipend of $1,800, to conduct a Title I Summer Reading Camp for Title I eligible K-3 students based on data and teacher recommendation. The Reading Camp will be conducted in the Peters Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Friday from July 19 to Aug. 6, 2010. Expenses for the program will be paid for through the ACT portion of the PA-Pact Grant.• Approved the appointment of Joseph Tout as assistant Athletic Director for the 2010-11 school year at a stipend of $3,500. Tout will assist the Athletic Director in all Athletic Director duties and responsibilities, and will be responsible for athletic fund raising activities.• Accepted the resignation of Jonell Dye from her position as a Personal Care Aide in the Slatington Elementary School Education, effective June 18, 2010, due to educational obligations.• Accepted the retirement resignation of Sandra Vajda from her position as high school Spanish teacher, effective the end of the work day June 21, 2010. At this time, she will begin her retirement from the district after 27 years of service.• Accepted the retirement resignation of Nevin Ranck from his position as high school Physics teacher, effective the end of the work day, June 21, 2010. At this time, he will begin his retirement from the district after 30 years of service.• Accepted the retirement resignation of Arlene Glasmire form her position as high school head cook, Rebecca Croll from her position as high school cook's helper, Bonita Haydt, from her position as middle school head cook, and Elizabeth Green, from her position as middle school cook's helper, effective the last day of cafeteria services in June, 2011. Contract language states that cafeteria employees who have worked for the district more than 20 years and give notice to the district of retirement 12 1/2 months prior to retirement date shall receive an additional $500 upon retirement. Glasmire will retire in June, 2011, after 33 years of service to the district, Croll will retire in June, 2011, after 23 years of service, Haydt will retire in June, 2011, after 29 years of service, and Green will retire in June, 2011, after 34 years of service.• Approved the administrative transfer of Janet Bashore from 1st Grade Peters Elementary to second grade Peters Elementary, replacing Diane McMullen, who retired, at no change in salary, effective, Aug. 30, 2010.• Approved the instructional appointment of Lauren Schuster from temporary professional employee to 1st grade Peters Elementary, replacing Bashore, who was administratively transferred, at a salary of $42,635, effective Aug. 30, 2010.• Approved the instructional appointment of Kelly Weiner from temporary vacancy replacement to Special Education teacher Peters Elementary, replacing Amanda Bashore, who was granted a leave of absence, at a salary of $42,435, effective Aug. 30, 2010, with a termination date on or about Jan. 26, 2011. Weiner's appointment is pending verification of missing documentation.• Approved the instructional appointment of Elizabeth Ache, temporary professional employee, to high school Physics teacher, replacing Ranck, who retired, at a salary of $42,435, effective Aug. 30, 2010. Ache's appointment is pending verification of missing documentation and passing of Physics Praxis July 24, 2010.• Approved the instructional appointment of Nicholas Sander, temporary professional employee, to the new high school History position at a salary of $46,300.• Approved the instructional appointment of Gina Rotondo from temporary professional employee to high school Mathematics teacher, replacing Christopher Jones, who resigned, at a salary of $42,435, effective Aug. 30, 2010.• Approved the appointment of Laruen Keglovitz from temporary professional employee to high school Spanish teacher, replacing Vajda, who retired, at a salary of $42,435, effective Aug. 30, 2010.• Approved substitute teacher Thomas Battista as Health & Physical Education substitute secretaries/aides at the 2009-10 substitute teacher rates. Battista's appointment is pending verification of missing paperwork.• Approved Jonell Dye, Shelly Pender and Carol Snyder as non-instructional substitute secretaries/aides for the 2009-10 school year at the 2009-10 substitute rate. Snyder's appointment is pending verification of missing paperwork.• Approved Snyder as substitute cafeteria worker for the 2009-10 school year at the 2009-10 substitute rate, pending verification of missing paperwork.• Approved Ryan Mayberry and Snyder as substitute custodians for the 2009-10 school year at the 2009-10 substitute rates. Snyder's appointment is pending verification of missing paperwork.
