Annual convention held by IU board; officers re-elected

The annual convention of school directors from the 11 public school districts in Schuylkill County and one in Dauphin County, who comprise Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 School District, was held Tuesday evening at the Maple Avenue Campus of Schuylkill IU in Marlin, Norwegian Township

Election of officers was held and seating of new representatives from the various county school districts. Each school district has one member serve on the IU Board.Reorganization of the IU Board had all officers re-elected, Dr. William R. Davidson, Pottsville Area School Board, president; Mary L. Kline, Tri Valley School Board, vice president; Robert Betz, Tamaqua Area School Board, secretary; and Scott Jacoby, Schuylkill Haven Area School Board, treasurer.New members elected were as follows:Edward Cope, Blue Mountain School Board; Daniel Shuman, Minersville Area School Board; Dr. William R. Davidson, Pottsville Area School Board; and James Onisick, Shenandoah Valley School Board, all for terms which end June 30, 2013.Edward R. Cope, Blue Mountain School Board, to fill unexpired term as representative from Blue Mountain to June 30, 2010; Anthony Miller, Mahanoy Area School Board, to filll unexpired term through June 20, 2012; Daniel Shuman, Minersville Area School Board, to fill unexpired term through June 30, 2010; Robin L. Hetherington, North Schuylkill School Board, to fill unexpired term through June 30, 2012; David Muldowney, Pine Grove Area School Board, to fill unexpired term through June 30, 2011; David Muldowney, Schuylkill Haven Area School Board, to fill unexpired term through June 30, 2011; and Scott Jacoby, Williams Valley School Board, to fill unexpired term through June 30, 2011.The directors heard talks on management of funds for health benefits, pensions and other compensations for employees of school districts. Chuck Peterson, trust manager for Pennsylvania Trust and Director of Cooperative Business Services and Operations of Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, and John W. Molley, CFA, senioir managing consulting for PFM Asset Management, LLC, were the speakers.Peterson told the group the PA trust was formed in 1983 and comprised of eight state trusts including the Schuylkill County Trust and was created to seek the best possible stop-loss insurance program and provide other desirable services commonly used by trusts and provide cooperative purchasing for healthcare insurance, legal services, prescription drugs and dental benfits.Molley spoke about PFM Asset Management, LLC, which specializes in managing fixed-income portfolios for public sector and not for profit organizations and serves as an investment advisor. It manages funds for 540 school districts in Pennsylvania.
