Heating help for the poor

Poor families in Pennsylvania will get a little more help to keep warm in this frigid winter.

The state Department of Public Welfare has announced it will increase by $100 grants issued through the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The increase brings the average grant to $326.The amount a family qualifies for depends on several factors, including the type of heating fuel it uises, family income and location.The income cap for a four-person family, for example, is $33,075.Gov. Ed Rendell has announced that the program will also be extended by three weeks, through April 2.For more information, Carbon County residents should contact the county assistance office in Lehighton at 610-577-9020.
