A Luzerne County woman is facing charges following an incident that began as a retail theft in Rush Township, and ended with a driving under the influence (DUI) arrest in Kline Township, both in Schuylkill County.
State police at Frackville said the incident began with a retail theft at the Walmart store in Rush Township, about 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29. Township police put out an alert for a vehicle described as a Mercury Mountaineer and the driver involved in the theft and last seen going northbound on SR309.
Troopers made contact with the vehicle inn Kline Township, just north of McAdoo. The driver was identified as Mellissa L. Spina, 23, of Freeland. She was suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance and was placed under arrest. A consent search of the vehicle revealed the items that were stolen from the Walmart.
Also found in the vehicle was drug paraphernalia. She was taken for a blood test at a Pottsville hospital. A records search revealed she was wanted on a active bench warrant issued out of Luzerne County.
Troopers charged her with DUI of a controlled substance, driving under suspension-DUI related, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Rush police will file charges against her relative to the retail theft incident, troopers added.
