The Dolon-Jones-Martino American Legion Post #304 and the Germantown Grove Club are seeking volunteers to help special needs children during their annual Carbon County Kids Fishing Derby. The derby was started more than 55 years ago by Legionnaires Ted Hinger and the late Philip F. Rodgers, Jr.
The event will be held at the Germantown Grove on Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Volunteers should plan to arrive at 8:30 a.m.
The annual event, held rain or shine, allows more than 200 special needs students in Carbon County school districts and the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit to learn how to fish with a volunteer. The children also enjoy lunch on site and are eligible for prizes, including fishing equipment and t-shirts.
In addition to volunteers, organizers are also seeking donations to make this annual event possible. Donations of fishing equipment, including fishing poles, reels, small hooks and tackle boxes, are being sought. Monetary donations will also be accepted, and will be used to purchase fish and prizes for the children. All donations are tax deductible.
For information about volunteering or donations, contact Henry Desrosiers at (570) 325-3986 between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
