Sami Vavra sets ESU school record

Junior Sami Vavra set the school record in the 100 breast and contributed to the school record-setting 400 medley relay team at the Grove City Winter Invitational on Friday and Saturday in western Pennsylvania.

Vavra, a Panther Valley grad, swam a time of 1:07.22 to win the event and shave 26-hundredths of a second off the 100 breast record set by Sarah Roscioli during her senior season last year. She also won the 200 breast in 2:30.67, just under a half-second off Roscioli's school record, and was third in the 200 IM with a personal best of 2:15.30.Junior Kimberly Lawson, Vavra and sophomores Allison Schafer and Andrea Tremper combined for a time of 4:04.88 in the 400 medley relay, taking 74-hundredths off the record of 4:05.62 set in 2010.The Warriors finished third in the team standings with 707 points. Washington & Jefferson won with 1,227 points, followed by Misericordia (976), ESU, Grove City (484), Hiram (233), Franciscan (102) and Malone (48) in the seven-school event.Lawson and freshman Karoline Vavra joined Sami Vavra as double-winners for ESU.Karoline Vavra, Sami's sister, won the 50 free in 24.85, the third-fastest time since ESU's program was reinstated in 1995, and the 100 free in 54.32, the second-fastest since 1995. She was second in the 200 free (1:59.20) and was on two winning relays (200 free, 400 free) and two runner-up relays.
