Preceptor news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority kept busy during the month of October, meeting twice and attending the Tastes of Greater Hazleton Event.

The Oct. 10 meeting was held at La Casa Dolce Restaurant, Tamaqua, with Sue Hummel serving as hostess. Her program provided information on ways to avoid identity theft.

Youth workshop

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church will host a youth protection workshop from 2-4 p.m. on Nov. 4. The program is open to all area volunteers who work with children. Such training is often required by church and organization policies and insurance carriers.

Melissa B. Haydt, consultation services coordinator for Family Life Services and Diakon, will lead the session.

To register, call (570) 668-2180 before Oct. 31. The church is located at the intersection of Greenwood and Mauch Chunk streets.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Oct. 25 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 86 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided an inspirational reading. Secretary Joan Ann Garber and Vice President Nancy Gerber provided their reports.

Joan Ann Garber also provided the invocation, entitled "The Rose."

Gladys Arner, Anna Mae Yushinsky and Pearl Davis were added to the sick list.

Apple dumpling orders will be accepted through Nov. 4, with delivery scheduled for Nov. 14.

Adult Day Care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center is seeking volunteers to serve on its board of directors.

The center has a variety of activities planned for November, including celebrating Thanksgiving on Nov. 14.

Trick or treat

All local municipalities have set Oct. 31 as "Trick or Treat Night" in their respective communities. The only differences will be in the hours set for ghouls and goblins to be on the prowl for treats.

In Tamaqua, tricksters will have between 6-8 p.m. to gather as many treats as possible.

Rush Township has set the hours between 5-8 p.m. for scaring up Halloween goodies.

Schuylkill Township communities have set aside the hours from 6-8 p.m. for trick or treating.

West Penn Township's trick or treating will be held from 6-8 p.m.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Oct. 9 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 39 members in attendance. The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld.

Birthday greetings were extended to Louise Horn. The annual Christmas party has been scheduled for Dec. 11 at noon.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.

Tax exemptions

The Schuylkill County and Tamaqua Borough Per Capita and Occupation Tax Exemption Forms for the year 2013 will become available on Oct. 29 for Borough of Tamaqua residents.

The exemption forms can be obtained at the Tamaqua Municipal Building, 320 E. Broad St., Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Forms will also be available at tax collector Alan Kerr's office, the Tamaqua Area School District Administration building, the Tamaqua ABC High Rise, Majestic House Apartment Complex, the Tamaqua Public Library and the Tamaqua Post Office.

Black out bullying

Next Friday, Oct. 26, the Tamaqua and Minersville Area School Districts will be cooperating in an effort to address the issue of bullying, while competing on the football field.

Teams, cheerleaders and support staff on both sides of the playing field will have the color black incorporated into their uniforms as part of the two districts "Black Out Bullying Campaigns." Parents, guardians and fans are encouraged to also wear black that evening in support of the effort to raise awareness to the cause.

Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held a beginning Day Celebration on Aug. 29 at Lake Hauto. Marie Umbriac served as hostess. The theme of the meeting was "Spam Delights." Members prepared the canned meat in a variety of different dishes with Patti Confer's spam loaf voted as the tastiest entry. Confer was presented a Spam apron and was crowned Spam Queen. Everyone in attendance received a Spam related gift, compliments of the hostess.
