Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon and Xi Delta Omega chapters of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Nov. 20 at Chantilly's Restaurant, Barnesville. The meeting included a celebration of The "Order of the Rose," which was conferred on Donna Gerber in appreciation of her 15 years of membership. Gerber received a special pin and a yellow rose, the symbol of Beta Sigma Phi.

Spirit of Christmas

The annual Tamaqua Spirit of Christmas Festival, scheduled for the first full weekend in December, will conclude with the lighting of the community Christmas Tree in Depot Square Park, at the Five Points Intersection. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 and will include Christmas carols with the Tamaqua High School Jazz Chorale, words from Mayor Chris Morrison and announcements of the winners of the cookie, tree decorating and gingerbread house competitions.

Gingerbread contest

The Tamaqua Spirit of Christmas Festival will include a Gingerbread House Decorating Contest for artists of all ages. There will be two categories, children between the ages of 6-12, and those 13 and older. Creations should be taken to the Tamaqua Community Arts Center, 125 Pine St., no later than Dec. 5.

Winners will be announced during the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, which will be held at 6 p.m., Dec. 8, at Depot Square Park.

Santa parade

Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive in Tamaqua on Dec. 6, escorted by their four-wheeled "reindeer" and elves. Due to the bridge construction on East Broad Street, Santa's trip to Depot Square Park will see a change in the parade route. This year, Santa will travel from St. Jerome's parking lot and head east to Berwick Street, beginning at 6 p.m.

The jolly couple will then make their way to Depot Square Park and magically illuminate the thousands of lights decorating the park.

Angel tree

The Tamaqua Salvation Army Angel Tree program is designed to make the Christmas season brighter for children in need. Angel Trees can be found at numerous businesses as well as the Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St.

Older and bolder

The Tamaqua Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group will discontinue weekly meetings on Nov. 20 with a Thanksgiving/Christmas party.

While the regular meetings will be on hold, the group will continue to be active with Christmas caroling and hand bell choir presentations. The "tour" includes stops at the Hometown Nursing Center, the Tamaqua ABC High Rise and the Majestic House Complex on Dec. 3; St. Luke's Miner's Hospital and Maple Shade Meadows on Dec. 4; Jim Thorpe on Dec. 7; Union Station on Dec. 20.

Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Nov. 6 at Two Kings Pizzeria in Hometown. Nancy Meiser served as hostess, treating members to antipasti and pizza. Meiser presented a program on the history of Veterans Day.

Cookies were collected to be shipped to Commander Brian Hummel and his troops in Kuwait. His mother, Sue Hummel, was congratulated on becoming a grandmother, as the commander welcomed a son to his family.

Bloodmobile

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be held in Tamaqua from 1-6 p.m. Friday at St. John United Church of Christ, Pine and Biddle streets. The church is sponsoring the Bloodmobile.

Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in general good health is eligible to donate blood.

Tax exemptions

The Schuylkill County and Tamaqua Borough Per Capita and Occupation Tax Exemption Forms for the year 2014 will become available on Monday for Borough of Tamaqua residents.

The exemption forms can be obtained at the Tamaqua Municipal Building, 320 E. Broad St., Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Forms will also be available at tax collector Alan Kerr's office, the Tamaqua Area School District Administration building, the Tamaqua ABC High Rise, Majestic House Apartment Complex, the Tamaqua Public Library and the Tamaqua Post Office.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club's annual dinner meeting was held recently at St. Joseph's Church in Summit Hill. President June Leiby conducted a short business meeting.

Dale Freudenberger of the Tamaqua Historical Society provided a program on the history of the society and its accomplishments over the past few years. He also spoke of current and future plans, including an ongoing remodeling project. A question-and-answer period followed his presentation.
