St. John's Heights events

The program for this week's soup and scripture at St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue, will be presented by Gene Connelly. This week, he will portray Pontius Pilate. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with noodle soup and desserts.

Joan DeAcetis will lead the Women's Bible Study group of the church at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7 in the Good Shepherd room of the church. The group is studying the Book of Acts.

Wednesday sessions

St. Mark's/St. John's Episcopal Church will hold its second "Soup and Session" meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Great Hall. The meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and all are welcome. The topic follows the events of Holy Week through and including the crucifixion and descent.

Women's Bible Study

The Women's Bible study classes at St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue, have been changed to Thursday evenings, due to the Lenten gatherings. The classes will now be held on March 7 and 21. They are studying the book of Acts. Joan DeAcetis is the leader.

Bloodmobile

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Memorial Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 1-6 p.m.

Devotional

Members of St. John's Lutheran Church, Heights, are invited to a devotional on Wednesday evenings during Lent. The evening will begin with a light supper, which will be followed by song and prayer. Tomorrow evening's supper will be vegetable soup.

Author at Dimmick Friends House

Mark Thornton will be signing copies of his latest novel "Bridesmen of Madison County" from Beau to Beau Books, as well as his second volume of "Twisted Tales of an Otherwise Ordinary Mind" at the Dimmick Friends Book Sale on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Ash Wednesday service

St. John's Lutheran Church, South Aveue, will hold Ash Wednesday services at 7 p.m. on Feb. 13. The service will begin at 7 p.m. During the season of Lent, the church will have soup and scripture every Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock. On Feb. 20, there will be vegetable soup; Feb. 27, sandwiches; March 6, noodle soup and March 13, hamburger BBQ. All are welcome to attend. Each evening will close with a song and prayer.

Vacancy

There is a vacancy on the borough Vacancy Board. The Jim Thorpe Borough Council will be accepting letters of interest up until Feb. 8. Those interested must be a Jim Thorpe resident. All letters should be marked Vacancy Board. For more information contact the borough office.

JTHS Class of 1964

Members of the Jim Thorpe High School class of 1964 are invited to an informal gathering to be held at 1 p.m., Feb. 20, at the Molly Maguire's. Several members of the class would like this gathering to take place every month on the third Wednesday.

Penn Forest Township

The Penn Forest Township monthly Planning Commission meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Penn Forest Township Volunteer Fire Company #1 located at 1387 State Route 903, Jim Thorpe.

As a courtesy, the township is reminding residents that Navitat is currently listed as an agenda item.

The board of supervisors meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at the municipal building, located at 2010 State Route 903, Jim Thorpe.

Bible Study

The Women's Bible study group of St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue, will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Room of the church. Group leader is Joan DeAcetis and the group is studying the book of Acts. The group is open to all women of the community.

Community dinner

St. Mark's Episcopal Church will host its monthly community dinner on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 4-6 p.m. A meal of spaghetti and meatballs will be served this month. If you have questions please call (570) 325-2241.

Touchdown Booster Club

The Jim Thorpe Olympian Touchdown Booster Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m. in the commons area of the high school. At this meeting, officers for 2013 will be elected. This includes, president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. As per the club by-laws of 2011, to become an officer, you must have attended 75 percent of the 2012 meetings, and in order to vote, you must have attended at least two consecutive meetings in 2012.
