Nesquehoning inductees are Coombe, Zaengle, Wise

The annual Carbon County Hall of Fame banquet will be held Sunday, May 28, at Memorial Hall, Jim Thorpe.

For children under 12, the cost is $15.Below are bios on the Nesquehoning inductees:Robert CoombeThe son of Al and Helen Coombe, Hauto, the late Bobby Coombe was a three-sport athlete at Nesquehoning High School before graduating in 1953.He played football for three years at right halfback under head coach Anthony Mezza and assistant coach Sam Pagano.He was the second highest football scorer in the Black Diamond League. In 1950-51, the football team won the District 11, the Mythical Crown, and Panther Valley Championship.In 1952, he was an honorable mention All State player who was offered eight scholarships, including one from the University of Michigan, but he settled for the University of Colorado, where he started college along with being attached to the Marine Corps. He went to Quantico, VA, and played football for the Marines' team, helping it to win a divisional championship.In basketball, he played three years under hear coach George Roscoe and assistant coach Pagano. He was a co-captain and one of the top scorers in the Black Diamond League, where he once tallied 33 points.On the gymnastic team, he was one of the top PIAA gymnastic finalists, having participated in the side horse, rings and parallel bars, where he took second place at the Penn State meet in 1951.He was pole vaulted for the Nesquers' track and field team.Bob has one sister, Dolores York, and a brother Paul who are still living. Two brothers, Thomas and Richard, are deceased.Thomas G. ZaengleBorn in Nesquehoning in 1936, Tom played as an offensive and defensive lineman for Nesquehoning High School, graduating in 1955. While in high school, he also participated in gymnastics, where he was a co-captain of the team, and was active in track and boxing.After graduation, he served in the U.S. Paratrooper 11th Airborne Division, where he played defensive noseguard. He was also a member of the 1957 Divisional Championship team.After military service, Tom served as a Pennsylvania State Policeman for 33 years. While serving with the state police, he was a member of the Trick Rider Rodeo Team.In 1967, Tom played defensive noseguard for the semi-pro Interstate League with the Cumberland Colts, Boiling Springs, PA. He also played in 1971 for the Chambersburg Cardinals.He was selected for the All Conference Team five consecutive years.After his football career, Tom served as an assistant coach for the Boiling Springs Midget Football program. He currently served as photographer for the Boiling Springs wrestling team.Tom is now enjoying his retirement, participating in several hobbies of choice. He is married to the former Darlene Filipponi and has two stepchildren and four stepgrandchildren. Tom and Darlene reside in Carlisle.Edward H. WiseEd is a 1974 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, where he participated in basketball and track. He went on to earn a B.S. degree in education/English from Bloomsburg University in 1978.Ed began his coaching career under recently-retired Elizabethtown College coach Bob Schlosser at Marian High School, where he coached from 1979-81, during which time his junior varsity teams had a two-year record of 42-14.He acquired his first head coaching job at Pine Grove in 1981, finishing with a 19-8 record and qualifying the Cardinals for the District 11 playoffs for the first time in 10 years. Pine Grove defeated Pottsville for the first time in school history that year.Coach Wise was then named head coach at his Alma Mater and during a seven-year tenure, 1982-89, his teams compiled a record of 133-61, which is the highest winning percentage of any boys basketball coach in the school's history. His teams won over 20 games and District 11 playoff games in five of his seven seasons, and made three appearances in the state tournament.His 1982-83 team won the District 11 and Eastern Pennsylvania AA championships before bowing to an undefeated Sto-Rox team in the state final, 62-57. His 1987-88 squad captured the Schuylkill League Division 1 title.Ed moved on to the East Penn League for five years, culminated by guiding a once-floundering Freedom program to District 11 semifinal and state playoff appearances. Under his guidance, Freedom defeated Allen for the first time in school history.Ed finished his coaching career at Lehighton, where he had a seven-year run. As the only AAA school in the Mountain Valley Conference, his teams reached and won District 11 playoff games in five of his seven seasons.In all, Ed mentored seven 1,000-point scorers, three at Tamaqua, two at Lehighton and one each at Pine Grove and Freedom. He ended his coaching career with 287 wins.He taught English at the secondary level for 23 years. He has been a PIAA varsity basketball official for the last seven years and is employed by Stoves 'n Stuff, LTD.Ed grew up in Lake Hauto and currently resides in Nesquehoning with his fiancée, Dana Horrigan. He has two daughters, Jessica and Coralyn.
