Orioles continue carnival planning

The Lehighton Orioles Nest No. 183 is steadily working on hosting its inaugural summertime carnival at the community center.

The Home in the Sky's representative Bob Heckman spoke to the Mahoning Township board of supervisors on Wednesday night to address concerns about a proposed detour for a coaster derby race to be held the first weekend of June.StartingJune 1, the community center will partner will AB Amusement to hold a family friendly weekend of rides, funnel cake, activities and a coaster race Saturday afternoon starting at noon. There will be two categories and age ranges for the race including derby car or jalopy with ages groups ranging from 8 to 11 and 12 to 15 being able to register for the race down Orioles Drive.Heckman said the private club will purchase the numerous detour signs needed for the road blocks during the race and then donate the signs to the township for future issue."We have ordered the closed signs and we will set them up and take them down after the race," Heckman said."We have the insurance and started a petition signed by the people around the area saying it was OK to have the carnival," he said."We will even barricade 100 yards before the start and finish lines as well for extra protection."During last month's meeting, the board expressed concerns for the lack of township signage and the detour route residents would have to take during the coaster race.Details of the carnival and registration for the coaster race will be ironed out as the June weekend nears.Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt updated his fellow supervisors on the status of the large tree impeding repairs for the Rex Road Bridge."I was able to speak to the(tree owners) about the tree and they had no problem with us trimming it. We said we'll trim it and put the large pieces on the land for them and haul the small pieces away," he said. The board will send out an official letter to the tree owners regarding the agreement.
