1 dead, multiple injuries

A Hazleton man is dead and nearly two dozen more were injured, some critically, when snow squalls hit the area Friday afternoon, resulting in a 32-vehicle pileup on Interstate 81 north in Delano Township.

Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville said that Charles M. Ehrenberg, 55, Hazleton, died of injuries sustained in the crash during "white out" conditions. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt. Police said there were multiple serious injuries; 23 were taken to area hospitals and three were flown from the scene.Remaining vehicle occupants were bused from the scene to the Hampton Inn in Hazleton where they were met by the Red Cross.The crash closed both the north and southbound lanes of the highway between Exit 131 (PA 54) and Exit 138 (PA 309).The squalls resulted in road closures and crashes on Interstate 80 westbound in Clinton County and Interstate 99 northbound in Centre County.
