Concerns raised over proposed Lehighton skate park

A Lehighton man said he doesn’t believe a small playground in the borough is the proper fit for a proposed skate park.

Resident Chris Nothstein expressed several concerns to borough council on Monday about the potential creation of a skate park at Skyline Park along North Third Street.Nothstein, who lives at 500 N. Third St., which is near the playground, said the playground isn’t big enough to accommodate a skate park.Inadequate parking, the policing of a skate park, and affecting the playground’s versatility by turning the playground into a skate park, were among the other concerns Nothstein mentioned.“I just don’t think it’s a good location,” Nothstein said. “I’m not against a skate park, I’m not against what Mr. Schaeffer wants to do; I think it’s just a bad location.”Josh Schaeffer, owner of Jam Concrete Masonry of Lehighton, spoke to council on behalf of “On the Grind” Association last month about creating a skate park.Schaeffer said his group would handle getting the grants, and said the skate park would be a concrete park.He said skateboarding is a fast-growing sport, and that a skate park would provide a place for kids to go.The park would be open year-round, but would be closed at night, Schaeffer said. His first option was the Grove, but borough Manager Nicole Beckett said the Grove steered the group to Skyline Park.Beckett said the borough has a $40,000 Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant for a master site plan for the Grove, as well as a new recreation center feasibility study. If a new recreation center were to be built, it would most likely be located at the adjoining parcel, she said.Beckett said there is not enough space at the Grove for a skate park unless the borough were to go into the adjoining empty lot.She suggested Skyline Park, which is a small playground located at the end of North Third Street.Beckett said she will work with the group on pursuing grants.
