Two facing DUI charges

Pocono Mountain Regional police reported the arrest of two drivers on driving under the influence charges in separate incidents.

• On Feb. 9 at 12:38 a.m., officers were conducting a speed enforcement operation along Route 611 in Mount Pocono when they clocked a vehicle speeding. The driver was identified as William Earl Smith, 55, of Long Pond. During the stop officers detected the strong odor of alcohol. He failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the county DUI center for a blood draw. As a result he was charged with DUI and traffic-related offenses.

• On March 8 at 1:27 a.m. officers observed a vehicle driving off the side of the road along Route 115 at Kuhenbeaker Road in Tunkhannock Township, and hitting a snow bank. Police stopped the vehicle and identified Joanne M. Reiss, 31, of Saylorsburg, as the driver. She showed numerous signs of intoxication and was given field sobriety tests, which she failed.

A police K-9 unit was called and alerted officers to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. The vehicle was impounded and Reiss was taken for a blood draw at the DUI center. A search warrant for the vehicle was secured. Police found a glass pipe with methamphetamine along with multiple torch-type lighters used to heat pipes for smoking crack and meth, police said. Police also found multiple hypodermic needles and several white glassine bags of suspected heroin.

Charges of DUI, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and motor vehicle code offenses were filed against Reiss.
