Tamaqua man faces drug charges after fleeing police

A Tamaqua man, who borrowed his wife's car without permission, found himself locked up in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville on Wednesday.

Tamaqua Police were on patrol at 3:45 a.m. when an officer saw a 1999 Dodge Avenger that had earlier been reported as taken without the owner's permission. The car was in the area of Hope's Auto Body at the western end of the Tamaqua Borough, heading east on Broad Street. The officer was able to identify the driver as Matthew M. Hartranft, 32, of 109 Coal St. in Tamaqua. The driver made the right turn from Broad Street on to Lehigh Street and pulled over. Hartranft got out of the car and began running toward Cottage Avenue. The officer followed and told Hartranft he would be tasered if he didn't stop running. The second warning got Hartranft's attention and he stopped. After placing Hartranft in handcuffs, the officer conducted a search and found a foil marijuana pipe with burned residue, a small packet of green vegetable matter, two empty blue wax bags, a white bag with brown powder, a pair of scissors and a contact case containing brown chunk residue. The vegetable matter field tested positive for marijuana, while the residue in the bags and case tested positive for heroin.Hartranft was arraigned before District Judge Stephen Bayer on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license and failure to provide information in a police investigation (car registration, driver's license, proof of insurance).Bail was set at $10,000, which he was unable to post.
