Berks man faces child sex abuse charges

Lansford police have charged a Berks County man with sexual abuse of a child and related crimes.

Joselito A. Mendez, 18, of 441 Bloody Spring Road, Bernville, was charged with sexual abuse of a child, corruption of minors, and two counts of unlawful contact with a minor after an incident on Feb. 17.Mendez was arraigned before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford and released on $5,000 unsecured bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause, a woman came to the police station on Feb. 20 with a Dragon Touch tablet and told police her 15-year-old daughter had been exchanging lewd comments and images with a person she believed to be an adult Hispanic male.Police officer Charles W. Horvath found on the tablet that on Feb. 17, someone using the screen name Jay Prince exchanged several text messages, pictures and videos with the girl, including images of a naked man engaging in a sexual act.The girl sent pictures of herself seminude and engaging in a sexual act.The mother said she believed Jay Prince may be from Berks County and that her daughter may have met him while she was in foster care.On March 23, police posted a photo of Jay Prince's screen image on their Facebook page in an effort to identify him.On March 25, a tip came in that led police to Mendez. Police learned Mendez's Facebook page had the same photo of himself as his screen persona.The officer ran a check with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Mendez's driver's license and sent a letter asking him to come to the station for an interview.On April 5, Mendez called him and admitted exchanging the images.He said the girl was his girlfriend and that they had known each other since middle school, and that she had told him she was 16, about to turn 17.
