Sweltering heat wave draws out ice cream lovers

On hot days like these, we all need a little cool down, and ice cream is the perfect fix.

Cole Wenner, a worker at Claude's Creamery in Palmerton, says customers come in all the time complaining."It's so hot out, they'll say," said Wenner, "A lot of people come in and say stuff like that."The Moving Wall memorial wasn't the only thing that drew customers to Claude's. The current heat wave certainly helped."We were swamped," Wenner said. Also, after so many veterans and military people came in to Claude's this weekend, Wenner suggested that they have a military discount."We had a teacher discount and a police one, but not a veteran one, so I suggested it. The next day I came in and it was there," Wenner said.Tim Pitts of The Ice Cream Lab has also noticed a boom in business during the recent hot days."There has definitely been more customers lately than usual," Pitts said, "When school lets out, sales drop because of fairs and carnivals, but people have come lately for our homemade ice cream."Homemade ice cream, and many of the favorite flavors, have been a big cool down during the heat wave.According to a random survey, cookies and cream and chocolate are popular flavors. Cookie dough and Claude's cinnamon graham are also popular."A lot of the kids like the brightly colored ice cream like Superman and Play Dough," Wenner said."Anything cookie-related," Jessica Gable and Marissa Marsh agreed were best.
