Tamaqua man tased following vehicle theft

Tamaqua Police received a call Friday morning from a victim who reported that his vehicle was taken from his home without permission.

Off duty officers spotted the car on Clay Street and saw Phillip Michael "Mike" Ryan, 26, get behind the steering wheel. His girlfriend, Ashley Bynon, got in the passenger seat and the couple drove away.Police stopped them in the area of Rose Street and Rolling Mill Avenue. Ryan got out of the car and fled, going north.After refusing to stop, officers used a Taser to end the foot chase.As he was fleeing, Ryan tossed a metal container to the street. The tin contained a substance suspected to be methamphetamine. He also had a pipe in his possession.Ryan was turned over to officials of the Schuylkill County Adult Probation, as he was on parole and was taken to the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville.He faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving without a license and escape to avoid apprehension.Meanwhile, Bynon too fled on foot, going south on Rolling Mill Avenue.When an officer told her to stop or he would use his Taser, she ran out of her shoes, losing her balance and skidding on the macadam. She was wanted on an active warrant and taken into custody.
