Erosion issue fix could cost $185K

A lingering erosion issue in Jim Thorpe Borough could set the municipality back $185,000 to fix, officials estimated last week.

Kim Mazur, of Entech Engineering, told council that a basin would need to be installed to help deal with runoff creating a divide that officials described as a "miniature grand canyon.""The basin would need to have some sizable depth to it to capture the water," Mazur said.It would be located to the rear of borough-owned property at Memorial Park. The runoff, according to council, is mostly located between Jim Thorpe High School's baseball field and Memorial Park, often causing Germantown Road to flood.Residents, namely Connor Rodgers, have been asking council for months to address the issue."We really need to do something," borough manager Maureen Sterner said last week. "It's moved up the priority list. We had a Germantown culvert pipe project that we'll put on hold so we can funnel that money toward this."It may also use a portion of a nearly $100,000 reimbursement it received due to low health insurance claims in 2015.Borough officials expressed concern that if the erosion continued during and after heavy rains, that several trees could eventually be in danger."It has cut quite a channel down there," Councilman John McGuire said. "The recent heavy rains have really added to it."McGuire approached the Jim Thorpe School District in November asking for the two governing bodies to work together on a solution."They were sent the estimate," McGuire said. "If it's part of their responsibility we'd like them to contribute. If it's not, it still needs to be fixed."The borough asked Mazur to give it a proposal for a topographical survey of the area before it moves forward.
