Barna, Hackenbergs are Nesquehoning inductees

The Carbon County Area Hall of Fame banquet will be held Sunday, May 29 at Memorial Hall in Jim Thorpe. The doors will open at 1 p.m.

This year’s inductees are:Palmerton - John Kleintop, Ted Plessl and Mike Dakan.Lehighton - Jim Remaley, Monroe Berger and Rick Stroup.Nesquehoning - Gary Barna, Nicole Hackenberg and Erick Hackenberg.Lansford - Joseph Jaso, Donnie Fredericks and Ed Shubeck.Jim Thorpe - Terry McElmoyle, Tricia McElmoyle and Farley Foster.Summit Hill - Trevor Lawrence Jr., Tom Bonner and Dave Evans.Coadale - Allysa Vavra, Joseph Holubek and Joe Terry.Tamaqua - Bob Schlosser, Aaron Frantz and Bill Sakusky.Banquet tickets can be purchased from the following Hall of Fame committee members: Danny McGinley 570-325-3550, Emmett McCall 570-645-2093, Art George (610-826-2830), Jake Boyer (610-751-6634), Trevor Lawrence (570-645-4722), Bill Gardiner (570-669-6564), Tom Bonner (570-386-2516), Herb Welsh (570-386-3187) and Bob Gelatko (570-645-8652). Tickets are $35 for adults. For children under 12 the cost is $15. The deadline for tickets is May 8.Following are members of the 2016 Nesquehoning Hall of Fame class.ERICK HACKENBERGErick Hackenberg resided in Lake Hauto and is a 1988 graduate of Marian High School. He was a four-year member of both the football and basketball teams. During his football career, Erick was a stellar quarterback who passed for 26 touchdowns, 159 completions, and 2,909 yards during his career year. As a junior, in 1986, he threw for 1,442 yards and led the Colts to the Eastern Conference Class 8 Championship, as well as a 13-0 season. In 1988, he was selected as Marian’s Scholar Athlete and also played in the Pennsylvania Big 33 game at Hershey.His football talents earned him a full Division 1 scholarship to attend the University of Virginia. Eric later transferred to Susquehanna University (Selinsgrove) where he finished his football career quarterback of the Crusaders.Hackenberg played three years of varsity basketball at Marian and was a tri-captain during the 1987-88 season.Since relocating to Virginia with his family in 2003, Erick has continued to be involved in athletics as an assistant football coach at Covenant High School, Charlottesville, Va. and most recently at Folk Union Military Academy, Fork Union, Va. He is currently a regional coach for the “Elite” quarterback camps run by ex-NFL quarterback, Trent Dilfer.Erick is married to the former Nicole “Nikki” Miller, and they reside in Palmyra, Va. with their four athletic boys, Christian, Brandon, Adam and Drue.NICOLE MILLER HACKENBERGNicole Miller Hackenberg is a 1994 graduate of Marian Catholic High School. She participated in track and field and volleyball. Nicole ran track for Marian both her junior and senior years as a hurdler and member of Marian’s District XI Championship team. It wasn’t until her senior that volleyball came into her life. Hackenberg’s athletic ability and raw volleyball skills were identified by the coaches at the collegiate level. She ultimately decided to pursue her degree and continue her pursuit of excellence of volleyball at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.Nicole was a four-year starter as a middle hitter during her first season and as an all-around player next three years. She was Captain in her senior year and earned all-league honors as well as multiple awards, which include ECAC Merit Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence, Lehigh University Faculty-Athletics Council Award, Lehigh Southside Booster Association Outstanding Athlete of the Year in Women’s Volleyball, and All-Patriot League Scholar Athlete Team. She also had the opportunity to try out for the USA Women’s National Team in 1993, where she made it to the final cut.After graduating from Lehigh, Nicole secured an assistant coaching position for a year at Susquehanna University, before returning to Marian in 1996 as the school’s head volleyball coach.She culminated a career record of 160-28 over six years, which included three Schuylkill League championships and a state tournament berth for the first time in school history.Nicole currently resides in Palmyra, Virginia with her husband Erick and their four boys: Chris, Brandon, Adam, and Drue. Nicole teaches English at the Fork Union Military Academy. She continues to be actively involved in both education and training athlete at all levels.GARY BARNAGary Barna was born in Hazelton, PA and moved to Nesquehoning, PA with his parents, John and the late Virginia Barna.Gary was a 1980 graduate of Panther Valley High School. He played basketball for four years and was a member of both the golf and track and field team during his senior year.Barna became Panther Valley’s first boys basketball player to score over 1,000 points. He still holds the all-time record of 1,245. The basketball team won the Anthracite League Championsihp his sophomore year and were the District II champions his junior year. He was named MVP at the Berwick Tournament and was named to several all-star teams his senior year.After graduating from Panther Valley High School, Gary furthered his education at the Thompson Institute in Harrisburg, PA, where he earned an Associate degree in business. After graduation from Thompson Institute, he accepted a position with Weiss Markets. He is currently employed as the Meat Manager for Karns Foods in Lemoyne, PA where he has been for the past 28 years.Gary resides in New Cumberland, PA. He has three children; Sabrina, Dustin, and Courtney, as well as three grandsons, Sawyer, Carter, and Will.
