Clements crushes Shenandoah

A player's attitude off the field often translates to his performance on it.

If you know Lehighton's Wyatt Clements, his work ethic is second to none. His relentless effort and year-round training has helped him rack up 2,279 yards, 41 touchdowns - and counting, over the past two seasons. The senior tailback has run over so many opponents, and broken so many tackles, that statisticians everywhere have given up on tallying "yards after contact."The Indians' leading rusher bulldozed his way for 171 more yards and a hat-trick of scores during last week's 47-14 rout against Shenandoah Valley, and earned the Times News Player of the Week award."Before the season starts, I lift every day and do speed conditioning three or four times a week," explained Clements. "Our coaches and trainers tell me to tone it down during the football season, because I was wearing my body down. I let my body recuperate now. I follow a very strict diet, I'm straight rice and chicken-other than the snacks that my trainer brings in on Mondays," he jokingly said. "If you don't take care of your body off the field, you're not going to be able to perform on the field-and I take pride in that."Clements (6-1, 220) - who is also a standout linebacker - admitted that he enjoys playing on the offensive end the most. The tailback explained that he's thriving in head coach Tom McCarroll's system, and loves being a huge part of its success."You can really make something out of nothing, I like to break big plays and lay some wood on people," said the senior."Coach (McCarroll) likes to throw in some reverses, some screens, and he's not against pounding it right down the middle. He's open to all aspects of the game. I love running between the tackles and when he calls "44" or "45" I can just pick a hole and hit it as hard as I can-pretty much anything that'll provide contact, I love."According to Clements, the successful game plan against Shenandoah last week wasn't much different than any other game this year."We didn't run anything different than we've prepared for the last seven weeks," he said. "We set up the run and the pass. Every time we run, (quarterback Tyler) Cann seems to find his receivers downfield and chuck the ball like we know he can. The fact that he's such a threat to pass really helps us set up the run."The Indians lead the TN area in total yards per game and scoring. Clements explained that the progress of his good friend Cann and the rest of the new weapons in the offense are a ton of fun to work with."It's amazing, this is the best group of players I've been around in my entire life," he said. "We all have a great bond, and each one of them have such great athletic ability. I couldn't be happier being a part of this team with these guys.""Our next goal is going to be 9-0. After that, we want to win a District 11 championship. If we get Bechai a third time, we're going to have to show them who really grew up."
