School bus driver cited after sideswiping bridge, building

A school bus struck a section of a bridge with its right, rear tire on Nov. 2 in Penn Forest Township, causing further impact and minor injuries to passengers.

The Pennsylvania state police reported that a standard-sized school bus, driven by Alward Hubert II of Lehighton, was traveling northbound in the northbound lane on Behrens Road, just south of Bear Creek Road.When it took a right-hand curve too close, the right side rear tire hit the bridge. This caused the rear end to sideswipe the bridge, causing minor damage to the bus. The bus then sideswiped a building at 263 Behrens Road, which caused minor damage to the building.This was a new route for the driver, police said.There were 12 children from L.B. Morris Elementary School in Jim Thorpe on board the bus at the time of the crash. Two of the passengers had minor injuries and were treated at the scene by Lehighton Ambulance and were released to their parents, police said.The bus was towed from the scene by All Points Towing.The driver was cited for careless driving.
