Bangor rallies past NL

Bangor used a late rally in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and steal a Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh, 2-1.

The game was moved to Northern Lehigh because Bangor's softball field was still unplayable, so the Slaters batted last since they were the home team. After Northern Lehigh posted a run in the bottom of the second inning, it seemed as though its slight lead would prevail. Time after time, the Slaters were unable to get things going offensively.Along with that, Nolehi pitcher Amber Thomas repeatedly stymied any Bangor attempts at scoring with timely pitching and a solid defense behind her. However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Slaters put enough pressure on to tie the game and eventually score the winning run on an error."That's been the way we've been going, Bangor head coach Rich Kessler said afterwards. "Last year, we came back and won quite a few games from behind. They just don't give up. It's just not in their nature to do that."The Bulldogs manufactured their run early as Thomas got on base and was granted a courtesy runner in Olivia Toth. Toth raced around from second pn a fielder's choice for the game's first score.Several innings of "three up, three down" ensued with a handful of hits scattered throughout, but the scoreboard remained stagnant until the game's late stages."We definitely need a lot of work," Kessler said. "We're swinging at a lot of bad pitches. Defensively, though, we played okay. We just need work yet.It was our first time out on a field this year, so it's tough. We can take a lot of balls in the gym, but until you get out on the field, it's something different."In the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs and Thomas were faced with a quandary, as the bases were loaded with one out. A heads up play collected a force-out at home for the second out, and Thomas forced a ground out to end the threat. In the following frame, Thomas struck out back-to-back batters to end another threat. However, the luck stopped there for the Bulldog ace, as a one-out, RBI-single tied it at one-all. Eventually, two walks loaded the bags and an error at first allowed Lexi Kessler to score the game-winner."I think our girls played great today," Northern Lehigh head coach Bob Hicks said. "We're young, and we just have to play for seven innings. We had it, and we were there. It just didn't go our way. We'll get the next one, though."For the game, Bangor's Lexi Kessler had a RBI-single, scored the game-winning run and maneuvered three walks. Teammates Dani Fey, Kailey Smith and Erin Happel all added sole hits for the winners, as well, while Allison Phillips scored her team's other run.For the Lady Bulldogs (0-1), Tiff Yesik, Meghan Handwerk and Shelbie Hyrowich all had hits.No. Lehigh 010 000 0 - 1 3 2Bangor 000 000 2 - 2 4 2Thomas and Hargreaves; Kessler, Happel (2) and Smith, Caleen.
