Panthers' Goida wins opener

HERSHEY - Heading into his first PIAA Wrestling Championships, Darren Goida's strategy was simple - do what works.

The Panther Valley junior was able to execute his plan to near perfection, picking up an 8-3 decision in the 126 pound preliminaries over Brockway's Jack Glasl."Since our last home tournament, things have been going really well for me," Goida said of the Coal Cracker Round Robin at Panther Valley last month. "And I've just kinda been able to keep that up all the way through the postseason."Goida led Glasl 6-2 heading into the third, and held on for the 8-3 win.Though happy with his performance, he admitted he was still hoping for more."I though I would get more back points than I did," he said. "But I was definitely nervous and that made it hard."But it was still great experience for me. Anything else is a bonus."Goida was the only Times News wrestler to earn a preliminary win through 138 pounds in the morning session.Northwestern's Matt Peters suffered a 4-2 loss to Sharon's Jules Hicklin at 106 while teammate Quentin Bernahrd dropped a 9-8 decision to Westmont's Carnell Andrews at 120 and fellow Tiger Jarret White was pinned at 126 by Central's Brock Biddle.Northern Lehigh's Colten Rex lost 6-5 to Forest Hills Jake Keiper at 113.At 138, Tamaqua's Dylan Rynkiewicz lost a 2-1 decision to Central's Nick Hoenstine while Panther Valley's Ali Capobianco was defeated by technical fall at the hands of Ligonier Valley's Dalton Clark.
