Hometown crash kills Grier City man

A deadly ATV crash late Monday afternoon in Hometown involving two brothers claimed the life of a Grier City man.

According to Rush Township Police Sergeant Duane Frederick, Daniel Pupko, 54, was operating a 1984 Yamaha all-terrain vehicle on Marian Avenue, Route 1019, in the vicinity of Henkel Road about 4:32 p.m. when Pupko lost control of the four-wheeler for an unknown reason, flipping it.

Emergency responders arriving on scene found the ATV positioned upside down in the middle of Marian Avenue with the victim lying underneath it.

Police said Pupko was killed in the crash and was pronounced dead by Schuylkill County Coroner Debra Detweiler.

Pupko's brother, Stephen, 56, was a passenger in the ATV but escaped injury, police said.

Police were able to confirm Daniel Pupko was the driver based on statements from witnesses living nearby.

Alcohol played a role in the crash, police said. Police learned the pair had just left the Quakake Legion.

Daniel lived on Grier Ave in Grier City, Kline Township, as does his brother Stephen, police said.

The road was closed to traffic for the duration of the investigation.

Other units responding were Hometown Fire Company, Hometown Fire Police, Kline Township Police, Quakake Fire Company, Ryan Township Ambulance and others.
