Schuylkill man facing multiple charges after high-speed chase

A New Ringgold man is facing multiple charges after he ran away from police on July 5 in Schuylkill County.

State police at the Schuylkill Haven barracks said Chad Kenneth Belsak, 39, is charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, fleeing and eluding police, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, speeding, numerous stop sign violations, trespass by motor vehicle and numerous other traffic offenses.Police said the incident began at 12:23 p.m. Sunday on Rt. 61 southbound when police attempted to stop Belsak for traveling 66 mph in a 50 mph zone. Police said he fled at a high rate of speed, making numerous maneuvers in an attempt to flee. He sped through the Cressona Mall parking lot before traveling onto Rt. 183, forcing numerous vehicles off the roadway and passing numerous other vehicles while traveling in the wrong lane.Police said he continued onto Wilder Street in Cressona and traveled onto private property owned by the Beckville Gun Club, crashing through a fence into a cornfield and down several privately owned driveway.He continued on Panther Valley Road into Cressona Borough, traveling on numerous streets before entering Schuylkill Haven, at which time he traveled recklessly on numerous streets and back roads, forcing motorists to take evasive actions to avoid him.During the pursuit, Belsak drove through numerous stop signs and eventually came back onto Rt. 61 from Sculp's Hill Road, continuing south on Rt. 61 into Deer Lake and passing vehicles on the right side by traveling off the roadway. During the pursuit, he continually slammed on his brakes in an attempt to have the trooper rear-end him and render the patrol car out of service. Police said Belsak's vehicle, a 1998 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck, eventually rear-ended a pickup truck that didn't move out of his way. He attempted to force the truck out of his way before the trooper was able to box him in and forced him to stop.Belsak was taken into custody with the assistance of local police departments. He was found to be wanted by the Schuylkill County Adult Probation Office for a probation violation and was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-South, Pottsville, for a blood test after it was suspected he was under the influence of a controlled substance.Police transported the man to the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville, where he is being held on an outstanding warrant.The trooper was assisted by the Schuylkill Haven, Orwigsburg and Penn State University police, as well as state police from the Hamburg and Reading barracks, as well as an aviation unit.The incident started just south of Mount Carbon and traveled to North Manheim Township, Cressona, Schuylkill Haven, South Manheim Township, West Brunswick Township, Landingville Borough and Deer Lake Borough.
