Lehighton history

The Lehighton 150 Celebration Committee will hold The History of Lehighton, Part 2, at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pfc. Clyde R. Houser Jr. Building/Borough Annex.

Lehighton's Sesquicentennial will occur next year. The committee wants to raise $55,000 for an eight-day celebration to commemorate the 150 years of the borough.Some facts about Lehighton:In 1915, the Lehigh Valley Railroad Co. constructed the Packerton Dam due to the need of water for the steam engines.Reuben Hofford's contribution to Lehighton was the Carbon Academy. This school offered the first high school education to Lehighton children.In 1918, a general doctor's visit cost $1.Look for more tidbits of history to be published every day through Friday.
