Fillies split doubleheader

Sometimes the best solution after a loss is having the immediate opportunity to hit the field and play again.

Marian did just that, as it hosted and split a doubleheader on Saturday against Williams Valley and Freeland MMI.Both games were shutoutsthe first not as friendly to the Fillies.Williams Valley scored 15 runs on 14 hits to defeat Marian in a four inning Schuylkill League matchup, 15-0."Everything seems to be peaking at the right time," said Williams Valley head coach Lee Reiser. "We're really hitting the ball and scoring a lot of runs. We're playing excellent defense and our pitching is getting better and better."Hannah Nester was the Williams Valley standout, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Nester has been one of the program's best, as she holds the Vikings school record for career hits with now stands at 128 and counting. Nester is also the program's leader in runs scored."That's a big milestone for her, she's really been playing well," explained Reiser. "All of these senior girls have been playing since their freshman year. We won the state title two years ago with them and it's nice to see them continuing to be successful."Williams Valley improved to 14-1 on the year with the win.Meanwhile, the Fillies tried to quickly put the mercy-rule loss behind them."We had a team meeting in between games to try and turn things around," explained Marian head coach Joe DeAngelo. "I said it was good to have a game right away to try and 'right the ship'."The talks during the intermission of the doubleheader must have cleared things up for DeAngelo's squad as Marian returned to form to defeat MMI, 3-0, in a non-league contest.Marian's ace pitcher Bethany Shaud is a pretty good option to turn to when the team needs to rebound following a loss. Shaud tossed a four-hit shutout, while striking out a season-high 14 batters against MMI."We wanted to make sure we didn't overwork Bethany (Shaud) during the first game," said DeAngelo about his pitching plan for the weekend."When you have a pitcher that strikes out 14 batters, there aren't many other plays to be made out in the field. Bethany keeps us in a lot of games. We've had some ups and downs this season At this point; we're striving to find that consistency. There are a lot of new faces stepping up into the picture this season."Shaud helped her own cause at the plate against the Preppers as she smacked a pair of RBI singles. One of the newer faces onto the scene this year for the Fillies is Shaud's catcher Nicole Salerno. Salerno has done a great job behind the plate so far this season. She added three more hits to her season total during the doubleheader. Brianna Wimmer, Bryianna Pearson, and Miranda Antiga all contributed offensively for the Fillies during the twinbill.Marian now has an overall record of 7-5 and a Schuylkill League mark of 4-3, where it holds a half-game lead over Mahanoy Area for first place."Our first goal is always to in the division," said the DeAngelo. "We're hoping to hold onto the lead that we've established up to this point. I really enjoy the chemistry that this team has."Williams Valley 352 5 - 15 14 0Marian 000 0 - 0 2 0Yendscak and Kreiser; Shaud, Joy (3), Markovich (3), and Salerno. W - Yendscak.
