White House officials visit Mahoning tree farm

For only the third time since 1966, a Concolor fir will serve as the official White House Christmas tree.

Representatives of the White House selected a 19 1/2 foot concolor from Crystal Spring Tree Farm in Mahoning Township on Wednesday for the White House Blue Room.Dale Haney, head superintendent of the White House, was thrilled when he was shown the tree by Chris Botek, owner of Crystal Spring."It's unbelievable you can find a concolor 20 feet tall," Haney said.Three White House representatives visited the tree farm to make the selection. They picked the concolor over a 20-foot Douglas fir that was also shown to them, even though the Douglas fir was so perfect in shape that Jim Adams, one of the trio, asked, "Are you sure this is a real tree?"This is the fourth time since 2006 that Crystal Spring provided the official White House tree. Other years included 2006, 2010 and 2013.Crystal Spring won the honors of providing the tree this year by their entry winning grand champion during the annual National Christmas Tree Growers Association convention two months ago in Michigan.Haney recalled visiting the farm four years ago to pick out the White House tree.During that visit, Botek showed him the concolor and predicted that it would someday be on display in the White House."I think it's going to look beautiful in the White House," Botek said. "It will look spectacular."
