JT, PV, Marian get volleyball wins

Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley and Marian all won volleyball matches on Monday.

VOLLEYBALLJim Thorpe-LourdesJim Thorpe was victorious in a Schuylkill League match over Lourdes, 25-11, 25-9, 25-7.Riley Carroll led the way for the Olympians with 17 assists, four kills, and two aces.Makenzie Walck added 11 kills, five aces, and two blocks. Erin Shigo contributed seven kills and one ace in the victory.Lehighton-Panther ValleyPanther Valley prevailed in three straight sets over Lehighton in a Schuylkill League match-up, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21.Jessica Wiese was a Panther stand out with ten kills, a dozen service points, and five digs. Jamey Mikovichhad 11 kills and ten digs, and Cassidy Ryan contributed seven kills, nine service points, and six digs.For Lehighton (7-5 overall), Katie Higgins had 24 digs, six kills and an ace, while teammate Alyssa Jordan converted eight kills, two blocks and three digs in the losing effort.The Lady Panthers also won the JV contest, 2-0.Tamaqua-MarianMarian defeated Tamaqua in straight sets, 25-11, 25-2, 25-6.In the contest, the Fillies' Abby O'Donnell became only the second player in school history to surpass the 3,000-assist plateau, as she amassed 17 assists and also added three aces.Alex Stroia led the offense with four kills, Abigail Stankiewitch served up seven aces and three kills, while teammate Maureen Kloap fired three aces and chipped in five digs.For Tamaqua, Vanessa Solt had 10 digs and two kills and Olivia Matula put together five service points.Marian also won the JV contest, 2-0.FIELD HOCKEYBangor-PalmertonIn a Colonial League battle, Palmerton managed to outlast Bangor, 3-2.The Lady Bombers saw a 2-1 halftime lead dissipate, after Bangor tied it up in the second, only to have the winners' Steph Brinker score the game-winner. Brinker scored two goals and added an assist in the contest for the noteworthy performance. Macie Hourt recorded her team's other tally.The Slaters received goals from Marlelena Kotretsos and Julia Kiss to keep the game heated.Both sides managed eight shots on goal in the game.ES South-LehightonEast Stroudsburg South needed an extra session to take down Lehighton in a non-league decision, 2-1.Madi Krajewski's unassisted goal in the overtime put an end to the match, after she notched her first goal of the game in the first half. Kelsey Picchianti assisted her on the first tally.The Lady Indians battled back to deadlock the score in the second half, as Allie Rossino notched an unassisted score to send it into OT.The Tribe held a distinct 12-5 edge in shots on goal in the game, with Lehighton goalie Taya Wentz stopping four shots.The locals prevailed in the JV contest, 2-0.Northwestern-Moravian AcademyMoravian defeated Northwestern in a Colonial League contest, 7-0.Natalie Acopian led the way for Moravian with two scores in the match. Mavy Clune, Brooke Talsania, Erin Danaher, Katie Persin, and Vicky Tahos all scored for Moravian.Laura Kotula of Northwestern earned 15 saves in the match.Pleasant Vy.-WhitehallThe Zephyrs jumped out to a three goal lead and cruised to a 5-1 win over the Bears in an EPC matchup..Shannon Lozier scored the lone goal for the Bears off an assist from Annie Butchkoski.Whitehall held an 18-2 edge in shots on goal.GIRLS SOCCERNorthwestern-MoravianNorthwestern defeated Moravian Academy in a Colonial League match, 6-2.Sarah Segan show the stole as she had two goals in each half for a total of four in the contest.Rachel Fisher contributed a goal thanks to a Segan assist, and Sabrina Mertz scored as well.Rachel Burcaw and Makenzie O'Brien each scored for Moravian.Bangor-Northern LehighBangor was victorious over Northern Lehigh in a Colonial League match, 6-0.A Bangor attack which included 17 shots on goal resulted in a hat-trick for Melissa Guydish en route to a Slater victory.GOLFBoys Schuylkill League ChampionshipsEvan Salamone, who golfs for Lourdes as part of a co-op team with Mount Carmel, fired a 8-over par 80 to win the Schuylkill League Individual boys championship at Mountain Valley Golf Course.Marian's Albert McFadden and Tamaqua's Carson Schoener tied with an 83, but McFadden won on a first hole sudden death playoff to claim third place.Other local finishers saw Marian's Jarrod Paisley fire a 94, Tamaqua's Anthony Lewis a 98, Marian's Mike Latoff a 106, Lehighton's Erik Reichard a 107, Weatherly's Devin Berger a 111, Lehighton's Deron Gilbert a 114, Tamaqua's Shane Osty a 116, Jim Thorpe's Joshua Abbott a 119, Jim Thorpe's Luke Eggert 1124. Jim Thorpe's William Kovolenko 129 and Lehighton's Cody Semmel 130.BOYS SOCCERMoravian-NorthwesternIn a rematch of last year's Colonial League soccer final, Northwestern and Moravian Academy tangled up in a battle, before the Lions came away with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory.The Tigers' Cody Gangaware struck first in the contest, as he notched a first-half goal off a feed from Thomas Creighton, to give his team the early lead.However, Jeff Brown's score tied it up and teammate Tanner Shane recorded the game-winner a few minutes later for the win.Moravian held a 16-9 edge in shots on goal, with Tiger goal keeper Kyle Bellhorn stopping 14 to keep it interesting.Palmerton-WilsonPine Grove-TamaquaAfter two halves and an overtime session, a Schuylkill League match between Pine Grove and Tamaqua (4-6-1, 2-4-1 SL) concluded in a 1-1 tie.Roberto Borrerro cashed in on a penalty kick for the Raiders in the contest.Cameron Shonnenberger of Pine Grove tied the game up in the second half to force overtime.Hunter Banavage had eight saves for Tamaqua.Lehighton-Blue MountainJonathan Benner was tripped in the panlty box and Fritz Miller took the penalty kick to give the Eagles a 2-1 win over the Indians.Dan Bakas scored the lone Lehighton goal, while Benner added the other Blue Mountain score.Lehighton had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal in the tussle.Northern Lehigh-BangorIt took overtime to determine a winner in a Colonial League match between Bangor and Northern Lehigh.Rui Macedo scored in overtime thanks to an assist from Nick Kotretos to earn Bangor its fourth win of the season.Despite the loss, Nick Miller of Northern Lehigh had ten saves in the contest.Williams Vy.-WeatherlyThe Vikings shut out the Wreckers 3-0 in a Schuylkill contest.Giuseppe Mini, Andrew Underkoffler and Steven Hill scored the Williams Valley goals.The Wreckers held a 12-10 edge on shots on goal.
