Marian announces final six inductees

The Marian High School Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Capriotti's in Tresckow.

The banquet will begin with a cocktail hour at 3 p.m, dinner will be at 4 p.m. and inductions will follow.Following are six members of the 2014 Hall of Fame class. The other six inductees. Dave Angelo, Brian Kennedy, Mike Hosak, John Pieracini, Mark Makovec and Brian Rafferty are the other inductees.Bill SakuskyThis Tamaqua native is a 1967 graduate of Marian where during his four year career was three-sport ath-lete. In football, Bill was a two-way lineman who played center and defensive end for three years and moved to offensive and defensive tackle a a senior. Bill lettered three years in basketball and averaged 12 points a game under legendary coach Hugh "Wink" Gallagher. Bill played baseball and lettered all four years moving between pitcher and first base. In 1966 he won the Schuylkill County hitting title and also had the best pitching record in the county. After graduation, Bill went on to Mansfield University where he played both football and baseball until injuries ended his sports career. Bill graduated in 1971 and after teaching at St' Joseph's in Summit Hill for one year, moved to Hamburg High School where he spent his remaining years in teaching and coaching until his retirement in 2007 because of health reasons. Bill was a highly respected and teacher and coach in Berks County and in 2007 was elected to the Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame and in 2010 was inducted into the Ham-burg Sports Hall of Fame.Brad ShanfeltBrad is a Jim Thorpe native who graduated from Marian in 1993. His athletic career revolved around basketball although he played freshmen football and in his Sopho-more, Junior and Senior years medaled consistently in track in the 800 meters, 4x800 relay and the High Jump. Brad played varsity basketball beginning with his Sopho-more year and scored 1,581 career points. In his senior season he scored 707 points and was the all-time scoring leader with 24.4 points per game average. He was the 1993 Times News player of the year, First Team Schuylkill League, 4th team All-State and led the Colts to the State Quarterfinals. Brad attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland VA, where he averaged 12 PPG as a sophomore and 16 PPG as a junior and both years led the team in FG per-centage. His senior season was cut short by a shoulder injury. In his playing years he was named to the Scotty Wood All-Tournament Team and MVP of the 1st Virginia Ban kTournament in 1996. Since graduation he has been employed by T. Rowe Price and AMF Bowling Worldwide and is currently emplotyed by QVC Inc, a leading multimedia retailer in West Chester Pa, as the Director of Global Finance Technology.Mary Rose Delpero TrumpThis Lansford native was a four year member of the Marian Fillies under legendary coach Elsie Tolan. Throughout her Sophomore, Junior and Senior years as a Fillie, she scored 717 points but gained much recognition as a defensive standout and established a school record for blocked shots which still stands today, she also finished in the top ten in both rebounds and field goal percentage. There were many games, particularly in her senior year where she earned MVP honors because of her defensive prowess. Mary Rose graduated from Lehigh County Community College where she also played basketball and was recognized for defensive skills. Today Mary Rose and her husband of 25 years live in Lancaster County with their two daughters in their mother's athletic footsteps. Mary Rose remains active in sports programs in Lancaster County.Wally YextWally, a Mahanoy City native was an outstanding point guard and defensive standout during his four years at Marian under Hall of Fame Coach Bob Fulton. As a Freshmen and Sophomore Wally played on teams that were undefeated and as a junior was a key member of the PCIAA State Champion-ship team that defeated St Basile of Pittsburgh in an epic bat-tle played in western Pennsylvania. As a Senior Wally was a key member of the Colts Anthracite League Championship team that again went deep into the PCIAA playoffs. Wally cites the influence that Coach Fulton had in his basketball and social development and the opportunity he had to be a teammate of Joe Balascik as significant factors in the success he achieved in his adult life. After graduation, Wally attended DeSales University and graduated in 1976. He be-came active in various CYO programs in the Lehigh Valley and used his Mari-an experiences to teach, coach and influence many young people with whom he came in contact. Wally also coached AAU girls basketball and ran numerous distance races such as the half-marathon and competed in cycle races of 40-100 miles in length,Jeff NietzIn 1983, Bloomsburg area native Jeff Nietz came to Marian and was hired to be the Director of Guidance. Having played baseball in a very successful high school program at Central Columbia and at Bloomsburg State College, Jeff immediately joined Charlie Connely's staff as the Junior Varsity Coach as well as having scouting duties. In 1998 he stepped into the position of Assistant Coach, helping the Colts win four division championships. Together with Chink, they started the Marian Colts Baseball Camp for area youth (one of the first in existence in the region).In 1994 Jeff became the Colts Head Coach when Chink moved on to Mt. Carmel as a foot-ball coach. That year he guided his Colts to the first of many Schuylkill League division championships and went to the District XI Class AA Championship - although they fell to Williams Valley, he was named the Schuylkill League Small School Coach of the Year. Jeff has remained the head coach for the Colts for the past 20 years, finally retiring at the end of the 2014 season. In that time, Jeff has amassed an overall record of 275-154, while qualify-ing for the District XI playoffs 19 times. His overall record includes nine Schuylkill League Division Championships: 1994, '98, '99, '01, '02, '03, '04, '06 and '11. In 2001, Jeff guided the Colts to the District XI Class A Championship beating Minersville; reaching the PIAA State playoffs finishing in the Elite Eight of the state. That year, he was rewarded with his second Schuylkill League Small School Coach of the Year honor. In the last six years, six of Nietz's players have been named to the first and second teams of the Pennsylvania State High School Baseball Coaches Association All-State All Star Team. In addition to his coaching duties at Marian, he is one of the founding members of the Anthracite Baseball Coaches Association and has served as secretary/treasurer throughout its existence.Jeff is married to his wife Rita (MHS Class of '77) and lives in Coaldale with their three children, Scott (MHS Class of '10), Frank (MHS Class of '14) and Lauren (MHS Class of '15). Awarded his Ph.D. in 2005, Jeff is teaching graduate classes in the Depart-ment of Teaching and Learning at Bloomsburg University of PennsylvaniaJohn"Doc" FallabelJohn "Doc" Fallabel began his Marian Volleyball Career in 1995 as a volunteer clock operator. From there it's been nothing but success. In 1996 he became an assistant on the staff of 2012 Hall of Fame inductee Nikki Hackenberg. When Nikki moved on, Doc became the Head Coach in 2003 and has compiled a record of 226-29 entering this season. His resume includes 6 Schuylkill League Championships, 5 District 11 Championships, a second and third place finish in the State and two State Championships, One in 2003 and the other in 2013. Doc's 2014 squad is currently in the Schuylkill League Finals and is poised for another state run..
