Schuylkill phone book recycling winners named

Tamaqua Area Elementary School won the Schuylkill County's annual phone book recycling contest, and two of its students won first and third places in the individual category. West Penn Township Elementary School won third place in the contest.

Tamaqua Elementary won $125. It collected 3,663 books, or 7.9 books per student. West Penn won $75. It collected 991 books, or four books per student.Tamaqua fourth-grade student Brooke Williams won first place in the individual category. She'll received $125 for collecting 2,621 books. Her classmate Alexis Buchala won $75 for collecting 367 books.Second place honors went to John S. Clarke Elementary School in Pottsville, which won $100 for collecting 4,149 books, or 4.4 books per student. John S. Clarke Elementary first-grade student Austin Haverstick won second place for collecting 891 books. He'll receive $100.Commissioners on Thursday announced the results. The winners will be recognized when commissioners meet next at 10 a.m. Wednesday.The contest is sponsored by the county Office of Solid Waste and Schuylkill Keep It Pretty.
