Pleasant Valley OKs Eldred school sale

Pleasant Valley School District is moving forward to turn over Eldred Elementary School to Eldred Township.

Thursday night, the directors voted 7-0, with Dominick Sacci and Len Peeters absent, to sell the building to the township for $1, if both parties agree to three conditions.District solicitor Daniel Corveleyn outlined the conditions:• Eldred Township's solicitor will have an opportunity to peruse the appraisal the district received Oct. 11, 2013. He will be given a redacted copy.• The school district and the township solicitors will review the reverter issue. The reverter is if Eldred Township no longer has a use for the building, it cannot sell it. The property has to revert to the district."I think we have to define that and set provisions in the agreement of sale. That will be approved at the next board meeting," Corveleyn said.• Eldred Township will have up to Aug. 28 to conduct an inspection of the building and decide not to buy it if they find defects that they would have to fix."They would be buying the building as is," Corveleyn said.Ken Newman, assistant to the superintendent, reported on the district's success with the Step By Step Learning early childhood program. He asked for approval to renew the contract for $273,410 for training and services throughout the 2014-2015 school year. The funds will be paid out of the Accountability Block Grant. The district has been utilizing the program since the 2003-2004 school year, beginning with kindergarten students.Board president Russ Gould said he would not vote to approve it. First he wanted to hear from the teachers because he's heard conflicting reports on the success of the program. He also wanted to see the report Newman gave."I need to understand it before I can vote on it," Gould said.Director Bob Serfass asked if they had reports before the program began."Were they that bad?" Serfass asked.Newman said "Yes," and two other administrators, Joshua Krebbs and Erica Greer, nodded their heads in agreement.Director Linda Micklos wanted to know if there might be a better program out there for the same amount of money."I want to see our students get the best from us. As the program stands, is this the best?"Newman and Chris Fisher, assistant to the superintendent, said it was the best program out there.Fisher told Gould that they would have more information for the board by the next meeting. The board voted to approve the contract, with a 5-2 vote, Micklos and Gould voting against the contract.
