Concerns raised about waiver

Chestnuthill Township supervisors on Tuesday night heard concerns about a waiver needed to clean the Merwinsburg Hotel.

Nancy Christman, president of the Chestnuthill Township Historical Society, told the supervisors that she and the historical society members would not sign a waiver. The waiver is needed for the members to clean the Merwinsburg Hotel, which the township owns and is in the process of restoring."It's not that we don't want to clean the hotel. We do. We just don't want to sign something we don't understand," Christman said.The supervisors looked at the waiver and agreed it was too complicated to understand. Supervisor Harry Miller said it was all in legalese. Supervisor chairman Chuck Gould said they would see that an amended, easier-to-understand waiver would be issued.Christman reported there would be no historical society meeting in July. They will have a yard sale on Aug. 16 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and a picnic on Aug. 20. Their next scheduled meeting will be Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Chestnuthill Township Park building.Chestnuthill ParkBernie Kozen, Executive Director of West End Park and Open Space Commission, reported:• there are currently three teams of the volleyball beach league• approximately 75 people attended June's free concert in the park• tennis has 24 players• almost 100 kids participated in the patriotic coloring contest.In July, the park will host:• Stamp-A-Stack at 8:30 a.m.- noon July 19• Art in the Park/Concert with Riverside Rhythm Band and Adam Jacobs, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. July 27• there are fly fishing permits available at the township park building for the McMichaels with the Pohoqualine Fish Association• discounted amusement park tickets are available at the township park buildingParks' newsSupervisor Harry Miller encouraged the public to visit the park at Evergreen Hollow. He said that after some unwanted activity at the park, the Pennsylvania State Police will be patrolling both parks more often.Boy Scout Life Scout Matt Cully received supervisors' approval for making a 9/11 Memorial for the Chestnuthill Township Park for his Eagle Scout project.Emergency servicesAccording to the report of Eric Hoffman, Chestnuthill Township's Office of Emergency Management's acting coordinator, West End Fire Company responded to 26 calls in June.West End Community Ambulance business manager C.J. Dickinson reported it responded to 154 calls in June. He said it has not had an auxiliary for years but are now in the process of forming one. They are looking for volunteers to serve on an auxiliary. If interested, there will be meeting at 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 7, at the Saylorsburg location on old Route 115.The Pennsylvania State Police responded to 340 calls in May and 300 calls in June.Other businessIn other business, the supervisors approved, 3-0:• Township office manager Cathy Martinelli's request to attend the Pennsylvania AMA conference to be held in Pittsburgh, Aug. 13-15, at a cost of $215 for registration, $393 for hotel accommodations, plus meals.• a donation of $350 to Camp Cadet Troop "N," a camp run by the Pennsylvania State Police for kids to learn more about law enforcement. It was already budgeted.• a lot line adjustment for Steven and Renae Schoch• a lot joinder request from Timothy Houck of Mountain Laurel Estates. He owns three lots. A large outbuilding straddles two of the lots. The building had to either be torn down or the lots joined. The three lots will now be one lot.Public HearingThere will be a public hearing at the next supervisor meeting, 7 p.m., July 15 on the cable franchise agreement renewal. There are no changes that will affect the public.
