Bulldogs top Tigers

Despite the fact that the Northwestern wrestling team is dealing with a contagious skin-infection hampering their lineup, Northern Lehigh head coach Steve Hluschak didn't want his team to lose any focus on getting the job done. When it came time to go to work, the Bulldogs stepped up for a 62-15 Colonial League wrestling win.

About a week ago, one of the Tiger matmen became infected with impetigo and in their past week of matches, they yielded numerous unfortunate forfeits.Against the Bulldogs, there were five matches that gave uncontested hand raises to Nolehi athletes, giving the winners 30 points. However, Hluschak saw plenty of strong results, as the contested matches were earned by his team (6-4)."We talk about that all the time," Hluschak admitted. "We want to constantly be improving our position and never be content with where we're at until we're on top of the guy, pinning him."The Tigers actually moved out to a 12-9 lead after the fourth bout. But it was short-lived, as the winners reeled off the next seven matches to put the team competition out of reach (50-12).After a forfeit at 285 started the night, Colton Rex and Bailey Wehr tangled at 106, before Rex prevailed with an 8-3 decision.Quentin Bernhard, who had been out for a week, returned tonight for the first time since the lay-off and did well, pinning Jacob Kistler in 1:54."It was good to see him back and under control out there," Northwestern head coach James Moll mentioned afterwards.Jarrett White then worked for an 8-2 lead after one period of action, before flattening Austin Hemingway in 2:29 for the 12-9 lead. That's when Northern Lehigh began their run, with Matt Schmall commanding his opponent, earning near-fall points twice before eventually garnering the slap in the second. Ryan Farber ensued with major point production, as he built a 19-4 edge, which got five team points for the tech fall in 1:54.Ryan Rubio battled with Hanny Awadallah pretty evenly at 138, as an early Awadallah take-down was immediately countered by a reversal, and they grappled evenly for the remainder of the first. In the second, Rubio attempted a move, before eventually finding the pin for his squad for a 26-12 Bulldog swell."I think the guys are starting to buy into what we're telling them," Hluschak commented on his team. "They're starting to be more aggressive on their feet and on top. Good things are going to happen when they start to do the things we tell them."At 145, Conrad Young built a 2-0 advantage on Zach Hunsberger, before working him over for another Nolehi pin, and teammate Chad Cederberg followed with a strong showing at 152. As time ran out in the first session, Cederberg almost got a pin, but the clock ended the threat. However, he returned to eventually nab it at 3:36.The other contested match-up came at 182, where junior Alex Russo of the Tigers faced off against senior Theo Young. In last year's meeting, Young prevailed with a 7-2 decision, but the improvement in Russo's form was present, as he grabbed a 2-1 lead after one period and moved to 3-1 after a second period escape. He earned three near-fall points in the third, before taking a 6-4 decision. Young fought back, got an escape and a takedown late to post the final score."They're a strong team," Moll commended about his team's opponent on the night. "Whether you have a full lineup or not, you can't give up that many pins to a team and expect to win. They're well-coached, they're tough kids and that's why they had 62 points."No. Lehigh 62, Northwestern 15285 - Cameron Kates (NL) won by forfeit106 - Colton Rex (NL) dec.
