Spartans quick strikes hurt Raiders

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - The Anthracite Football League stereotype is labeled as smashmouth football, running between the tackles, and controlling the clock.

The coaches, experts, and fans all know that North Schuylkill has a host of runners in the backfield which can provide thie Anthracite winning formula.What really makes this North Schuylkill squad special, is that it can also puts points on the board in the blink of an eye.Richard Zahodnick and Tevin Murray each caught bombs from Spartan quarterback Bobby Grigas on two separate occassions immediately following two Raider turnovers. The quick strikes helped propel North Schuylkill to a 35-6 victory over Tamaqua.John Rupinski plowed through the Tamaqua defense for a four-yard touchdown on the North Schuylkill's first possession. Later in the first quarter, Grigas hooked up with Tevin Murray for a short score to extend the Spartan lead to 13-0.North Schuylkill held possession in the beginning of the second quarter and still led by 13 points. On the first play of the stanza, senior Raider linebacker Tyler Skripko recovered a Spartan fumble which set the Raiders up with great field position and a chance to get back into the contest."We don't have a lot of seniors, but the seniors we have are extremely dedicated," said Tamaqua head coach Sam Bonner. "They're one of the hardest working group of kids I've had and they leave everything out there on the field."However, on a fourth down and two on the Tamaqua drive following the takeaway, Raider quarterback Thad Zuber was hit and fumbled, which North Schuylkill's Ryan Mazeika recovering."Obviously, we have some things we need to work on and we need to get better," said the Raider coach. "We knew we would have some match up problems with their (North Schuylkill's) receivers."On the very next play, Grigas showed much poise in the pocket as he took a bruising hit, stood tall in the pocket, and delivered a perfect strike to Zahodnick down the middle of the field for a 54 yard touchdown. That extended the Spartans lead to 21-0."We have a nice rotation up front on both sides of the ball," noted North Schuylkill head coach Wally Hall as he credited the play of his line. "Offensively, we have a nice foundation of talented runners and we can certainly throw the football too."The Spartans tagged on one more score before the half ended, thanks to a 34-yard Grigas-to-Murray connection following another Tamaqua turnover. The junior Spartan signal caller ended the evening with 159 total yards and three TDs.Everyone involved in the Spartan offense looked extremely comfortable, which is impressive because most of the skill players are not seniors. The Spartans had seven different ball carriers in the game."Our offseason has been very good since the summer," Hall said. "The kids work extremely hard and put a ton of time into learning the offense, defense, and especially with conditioning."Tamaqua did some nice things toward the end of the game, as Ernie Shilko and Tyler Skripko were responsible for the Raider touchdown in the fourth quarter. Bonner also noted that Collin "Bud" Moyer is extremely versatileand is doing positive things for the Raiders.The Spartan coach seemed satisfied with his squad's week one performance."It's important to constantly build our confidence," Hall added. "The better we execute the more confident we will become. This group listens well and does whatever we ask of them and everyone is doing a great job."
