Fast-moving fire destroys home

A fast-moving fire destroyed a Newkirk, Schuylkill Township, home this morning, despite a quick response from firefighters.

The alarm sounded minutes after 6 a.m., dispatching units to 614 Old 209 Road for a structure fire. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find flames and heavy smoke pouring from the two story home. Despite the efforts of personnel from the Tuscarora, New Philadelphia, New England/Walker Township, Tamaqua, Coaldale, West Penn and Pottsville fire departments, the home sustained extensive damage, destroying much of the personal belongings of occupant Joseph Hartranft.Also responding were Tamaqua Police, Ryan Township Emergency Rescue, Tamaqua ambulance, Tamaqua Salvation Army, American Red Cross and the Tamaqua Volunteers.A fund is being set up by the Tamaqua Volunteers.
