Two Mahanoy City women facing theft counts get ARD treatment

Two Mahanoy City women, one acting postmistress for two post offices in North Union Township, and the second a treasurer for a wrestling club, both charged with theft, were among six defendants placed in the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARD) probation program by Judge Cyrus Palmer Dolbin in Schuylkill County Court.

The program is for first offenders who are charged with committing a non-violent crime and if they complete the program and its conditions their criminal record will be wiped clean. A person does not admit guilt in entering the program.All were placed for a year, unless otherwise noted.Lori Ann Schmerfeld, 46, Mahanoy City, as acting postmistress at the Nuremberg and Kelayres Post offices in North Union Township, who allegedly took cash from the stamp stock, was assessed $350 to defray the program, pay $50 to Criminal Justice Enhancement Account (CJEA) fund, and perform 10 hours of community service. She was cited by Trooper Michael Allar.Kelly Marie Lewandowski, 41, Gilberton, as past treasurer of the Mahanoy Youth Wrestling Club, a nonprofit organization for students from grades kindergarten through sixth from Mahanoy Area School District, on a charge of theft of funds from the club, was placed for 24 months, assessed $350, pay $50 to CJEA fund, perform 20 hours of community service, and make restitution of $2,265 to the club. The club provides competitive wrestling opportunities for the students.Nicholas Michael Page, 23, Pottsville, theft of a large iron plate from property of Kuperavage Coal Company, South Eagle Hill Road, Blythe Township, assessed $350, pay $50 to CJEA fund, and make restitution of $500 to the coal company.
