STS bus, van collide; two drivers injured

A Schuylkill Transit System (STS) bus and a van collided in a firery crash yesterday sending both drivers to trauma centers.

State police at Frackville said the accident occurred at the intersection of state routes 924 and 339 in the village of Brandonville, East Union Township, about 7:10 a.m.Troopers said Harold Wolford, 43, of Mount Carmel, was driving a 1997 Ford van eastbound on 339 and failed to stop for a posted stop sign at the intersection with 924. His van entered the intersection and struck a 2008 STS bus driven by Karen Schultz, 51, of Schuylkill Haven, who was northbound on 924. There were no passengers on the bus.Troopers said the force of the impact caused both vehicles to continue across the intersection where the Ford struck a Frontier utility pole, stop sign, street sign, and a metal business sign belonging to the Central Highway Oil Company.The STS bus also struck the pole. The two vehicles came to rest adjoinging each other and blocking the northbound lane.Troopers said the Ford caught fire. An offi-duty Shenandoah police officer, Robert Senape, who was heading home after working the midnight shift, was behind the bus.Senape and another motorist, identified as John Wakubik, who was on his way to work and following Wolford, pulled the two drivers to safety from their vehicles. As the Ford burned, the fire began to spread to the bus.Wolfod was flown by Lifeflight helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he is listed in stable condition, troopers said. Schultz was flown by Medevac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where she is listed in stable condition with right leg and pelvic area injuries.Both vehicles sustained heavy damages.
