Tamaqua picked up wins in boys soccer, girls soccer and tennis to highlight Saturday's scholastic sports action

BOYS SOCCERPottsville-TamaquaTamaqua pulled out a 3-1 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.After a scoreless first half, the Raiders' Anatoly Dermo scored off a Josh Delp assist. Jake Fegley and Delp added scores later to secure the win.Tamaqua held a 12-11 shot advantage in the game. Tyler Cimino stopped 10 shots in goal in the winning effort.Pottsville won the JV contest, 3-0.GIRLS SOCCERBlue Mountain-TamaquaTamaqua began its league schedule with an impressive victory, defeating defending Schuylkill League and District 11 champion, Blue Mountain, 1-0 in double overtime.Kayla Hope ended the contest, when she took a feed from teammate Cady O'Malley and scored with 3:23 remaining in the second OT session.Chey Bates was tough again in the net as she stopped 23 shots for her third shutout of the season and school record 25th career shutout.Tamaqua outshot Blue Mountain, 27-23. Eagles' goalie Allison Ebling had 26 saves.Blue Mountain recorded a 4-0 JV win.FIELD HOCKEYNazareth-No. LehighTied at the end of regulation, Nazareth's Jackie Hikes scored unassisted in the first overtime session to defeat Northern Lehigh, 3-2.Rachel Wagner scored both of the Bulldogs' goals.Nicole Horn had 12 saves fo Northern Lehigh (1-2).Pleasant Vy.-ParklandParkland cruised to a 7-0 non-league win over Pleasant Valley.Hannah Peters scored a hat trick, while Brooke Benedict tallied two goals and two assists for the Trojans.Goalie Rachel Wild stopped 13 shots the Bears (0-3).GIRLS TENNISPottsville-TamaquaThe Lady Raiders got big wins from two of their singles players and one doubles team to pull out the 3-2 win over Pottsville.Nicki Mateyak and Sarah Zoba won in straight-set singles matches while the tandem of Emily Hansler and Laine Confer won in similar fashion.SINGLESHannah Goodman (P) d. Ashley Balliet/Minke Pheiffer 6-1, 6-2.GIRLS VOLLEYBALLPleasant Valley ClassicPleasant Valley fell just short of making it into the championship round as they went 2-2 on the day and failed to make it out of pool play.The Bears defeated Abington Heights, then lost to Mount Olive, came back to beat St. Hubert, and then dropped a match to CB East.Easton defeated CB East in the finals to win the championship.Individually, Pleasant Valley was led by Breanna Joseph with 15 kills, and 10 blocks; Courtney Miller had 10 kills and two blocks; Mackenzie Dorney had 30 digs and four kills; Andrea Giardina had 17 digs; Steph Schmitt had 24 assists and nine aces; Kiersten Griesback had nine assists; and Paige Band added seven kills.Pleasant Vy.-ES NorthPleasant Valley opened Mountain Valley Conference play with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-18 victory over East Stroudsburg North on Friday.Breanna Joseph led the way at the net with nine kills for the Bears. Courtney Miller added three kills and five blocks while Bridget Lozier had two kills and four blocks. Defensively, MacKenzie Dorney had 15 digs and Andrea Giardina had 11 digs. Setters Kiersten Griesback (10 assists, six aces) and Steph Schmitt (six assists, three aces) also played well.Pleasant Valley won the JV match, 25-10, 25-17.
