Ametek fire quelled

Nesquehoning firefighters were kept busy Thursday afternoon fighting a stubborn fire at Carbon County's second largest industry, the Ametek Corporation.

Shortly after 3 p.m. it was reported a dust collecting bin to the rear of the sprawling structure was fully involved in flames.When fire personnel arrived they found heavy smoke and flames shooting from the unit. Firemen quickly extinguished the blaze but were confronted with checking the vast amount of duct work in the plant.Employees were quickly evacuated to a safe area at the southern perimeter of the parking lot. One person was transported by Nesquehoning ambulance to an area hospital, suffering from smoke inhalation. It was unknown if the victim was a firefighter or an employee of the plant.The plant is located along SR54 just west of Nesquehoning.
