Police get early wakeup call, pursue, capture two suspects

A foot pursuit is not necessarily the way a police officer wants to begin his shift. But that's what happened in Tamaqua Wednesday as Patrolman Michael Hobbs and Cpl. Henry Woods prepared to start their morning.

After looking at night shift reports Wednesday, Hobbs went out on patrol around 7:30 a.m. As he began his tour of the Dutch Hill he spotted two individuals acting in a suspicious manner, one of them actually riffling through a parked car. Hobbs called a report in to the Schuylkill County Communications Center as he stopped the police cruiser on Patterson Street. The two males immediately began running away, but Hobbs was able to apprehend one. The other fled as Cpl. Woods responded to assist. As the second male fled from view, Hobbs and Woods called for back up with an immediate response coming from West Penn Township Police Chief Brian Johnson and Officer Melissa Boyer, Rush Police Sgt. Duane Frederick, Coaldale Police Chief Tim Delaney and State Trooper Ron Kazakavage and his K-9 partner Rommy. The officers blanketed the Dutch Hill section and eventually captured the second subject in an area between Schuylkill Avenue and Greenwood Street. The duo was taken to the police station and identified as two 17 year old males, both from Tamaqua. Charges are pending. The officers received a "tremendous boost," according to Hobbs, from "neighbors in the area who kept track of the suspect's movements and related them to the officers." Anyone in that area missing items from their vehicles should contact police at 668-6100.
