Lehighton borough's former zoning officer is being taken out of retirement.

John Quinn, who had resigned as zoning and property code enforcement office last Nov. 30, was rehired this week by Lehighton Borough Council to work on a part-time basis.Quinn didn't apply for the job. The council said there are numerous pressing zoning issues in the borough.The acting zoning officer is borough manager John Wagner, who the council said can use assistance in catching up with pending applications and complaints.Borough secretary Brenda Koons phoned Quinn during the council meeting and asked for his help in the matter. Quinn agreed. The council said it will discuss a salary not to exceed $14 per hour with Quinn."Will this be indefinitely?" asked council member Dale Traupman.The council agreed to utilize Quinn's services for four to six months and then discuss the matter again. In addition, council President Grant Hunsicker said it will review the matter monthly.Zoning issues came up frequently during neighborhood meetings conducted over the past two weeks by Traupman. At these session, residents were advised that one of the setbacks in enforcement is that the borough presently has no zoning officer.Among the items on the agenda at the council meeting this week was to discuss permit fees under the Uniform Construction Code.The discussion wasn't held because of the lack of a zoning officer.
