Weissport selects new code officer

Three major changes were discussed at the Weissport Borough Council Meeting on Monday. The first is a new employee. Councilman Thomas Ketchledge announced that the borough has selected Paul Jarrett of Lehigh Valley Inspection Services as the new code enforcement officer.

Ketchledge said that while both candidates for the position “were pretty much good candidates,” Jarrett ultimately was chosen for his wide range of inspection certifications.

The second was the approval of renovations to the borough building. The doors and roof will soon be replaced, as the council voted to proceed with the $18,000 project. After vigorous debate over whether or not to secure a loan, it was determined that the borough had enough funds to pay for the renovations.

The third was a vote to purchase new security cameras for the Weissport playground in response to recent vandalism. The $5,780 project, including cameras for the playground and a security hub, will potentially be funded through leftover money from a recent grant, though solicitor Greg Mousseau cautioned the council to “review the grant documents” to determine that the camera is a permissible use of the grant money.

The council passed a motion to purchase the new cameras, “pending the grant document wording,” as stated by Ketchledge.

In other news, Mayor Paulette Watson officiated her first wedding as mayor. She has also been asked to appear on a radio show with Bob Lowe of WEEU AM 830 to discuss “what’s going on (in Weissport) and surrounding areas.” She said that she believes the exposure “would be a good thing” for the town.

Councilwoman Linda Schoenberger was not in attendance.
