Basket raffle set for Lehighton native fighting cancer

A fundraiser for a Saylorsburg woman, who continues her battle with stage IV cancer, is set for Saturday.

The Basket Raffle Fundraiser to benefit Jen Nielsen’s Cancer Journey will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mahoning Valley Fire Department.

There will be a basket raffle, bake sale, 50/50 drawing, and hot food and beverages for purchase. The alumni band Out of Shape will perform from noon to 2 p.m.

A Lehighton Area High School graduate, Nielsen, 30, of Saylorsburg, is a mother who has two girls, ages 4 and 2, and has been fighting stage IV cancer for a year.

Nielsen and her family are asking for financial support to cover continued medical expenses and treatment costs, according to Joanie Schneider-Radler, who organized the event on behalf of her daughter.

She said Jen has been battling stage 4 Hodgin’s Lymphoma for a year.

“Unfortunately after completing six months of chemotherapy, the cancer did not go into remission, and therefore, she’s faced with continued treatments, as well as trying to continue to navigate life after chemotherapy with a number of residual side effects,” Schneider-Radler said.

Nielsen organized a GoFundMe fundraiser to help with cancer treatment costs.

“I was originally diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma in May of 2023, and underwent conventional chemotherapy treatment,” Nielsen said. “Unfortunately, the chemotherapy did not put the cancer into remission, and I find myself on this continued cancer journey today.

“I’ve had a higher calling since being diagnosed in 2023 to not just get rid of the lymphoma, but also heal my body, mind and spirit so that no cancer comes back. I have found alternative/holistic cancer treatment programs that not only prove to be successful at curing the cancer while also healing the whole person, but that also align with my faith, beliefs and values.

“I am raising funds to be able to seek these treatments as they are not covered by insurance. The funds raised will go toward alternative/holistic cancer treatments, and travel expenses all of which are up front out of pocket costs.”

To date, $4,800 of the $100,000 goal has been raised.
