Four facing charges after fake robbery report

Four people are facing various charges, including drug counts, following an incident in Monroe County in which a false report of a robbery was made.

Pocono Mountain Regional police identified the suspects as Katelin M. Hernandez, 19, and Wanda R. Roman, 41, both of the 7100 block of Glouster Road, Tobyhanna; Eugene J. Pena, 24, of the 600 block of Academy Street, New York City, New York; and Fausto Hernandez, 41, of the unit block of Alexander Drive, Washingtonville, New York.

According to police on Feb. 16 at 10:34 p.m. officers were dispatched to the Glouster Road address for a report of an armed robbery. On scene Katelin Hernandez, Roman and Fausto Hernandez, reported Katelin Hernandez was home alone with two young children when Pena arrived and entered the home with an object, believed to be a gun. He reportedly forced her to take him to money in the residence and then fled with $1,500.

With the assistance of family, Pena was located at the Walmart store in East Stroudsburg and was taken into custody by Stroud Regional Police and state police at Stroudsburg. He was found with $1,250 in cash on him. He was brought back to the PMRP headquarters along with his vehicle.

During the investigation, police were given information that Pena had purchased narcotics from Fausto Hernandez, and had in turn, sold three pounds of counterfeit marijuana to Kaitlin Hernandez and Roman, for which they paid him $1,300. Pena was initially charged with robbery, burglary and related crimes based on the report given by Katelin and Fausto Hernandez and Roman.

On Feb. 17 police conducted additional interviews with Katelin Hernandez and Roman at police headquarters. The investigation revealed that the robbery and burglary report was fabricated and did not happen. Police also served search warrant on the vehicle driven by Pena. Narcotics were found in the vehicle.

Due to the fact the initial report of a robbery was not true, police withdrew the charges of robbery, burglary and related counts against Pena.

As a result of the investigation police filed charges against the four as follows:

Pena: Criminal use of a communication facility, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, both felonies; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

Fausto Hernandez: Criminal use of a communication facility, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, both felonies; false reports to law enforcement (two counts), tampering with evidence, obstructing justice, hindering apprehension, and possession of drug paraphernalia, all misdemeanors.

Roman: False reports to law enforcement (two counts), tampering with evidence, obstructing justice and hindering apprehension, all misdemeanors.

Katelin Hernandez: False reports to law enforcement (two counts), unsworn falsification to authorities, obstructing justice and hindering apprehension, all misdemeanors.
