D&L Heritage Corridor plans half marathon, walk Sunday

Care to take a scamper on a scenic trail under the comfort of crisp autumn temperatures?

The eighth annual Delaware and Lehigh Heritage Half Marathon Run/Walk starts at 8 a.m. Sunday at Northern Lehigh High School, and ends at the Canal Street Park in Northampton.

There will be various runner and walker awards, random prizes, a post-race buffet, volunteers, indoor facilities at the start and finish, gender-specific technical T-shirts and more.

The starting line will be at the Northern Lehigh High School complex. Runners and walkers will have use of the gymnasium at the school before the race.

Gym doors open at 6 a.m. Restrooms are available. Participants must be at the starting line at least 10 minutes before the start of the race.

Parking will be at Northern Lehigh High School; buses will transport participants back to vehicles after the race. Parking is available in Northampton at several lots within walking distance of the finish line.

Elissa Garofalo, executive director, D&L National Heritage Corridor, said about 800 runners are expected to compete in this year’s event.

“It’s the last major race in the Lehigh Valley and Northern Lehigh area of the season,” Garofalo said. “We have been blessed with unseasonably warm weather in the last few years, and it’s supposed to be in the mid-50s, which is good running weather.”

Garofalo added they are really pleased to have L.L. Bean on as a supporting sponsor for this year’s event.

“One of the things we like about the event itself is that we have individuals who come and do this, they look at it as a goal for the year,” she said. “There’s a number of stories we’ve gotten because people have used the trail for their healthy living regime, as it’s one of the only walker friendly half marathons around.”

Last year’s event raised more than $25,000 to support the D&L’s important programs and preserve the beauty and history of the trail.
