West Penn police to deliver Christmas gifts

The West Penn Township Board of Supervisors met on Monday morning.

Police Chief Brian Johnson spoke about the busy week his department had.

The police department, and the Dollar General in Snyders, teamed up to put together a local toy drive this month. Johnson said the drive was for anyone who resides in Tamaqua Area School District.

“We wrapped about 150-160 gifts,” Johnson said. “This is the first year we’re doing this. Obviously, with the pandemic, everyone is in need. The Dollar General said we need to do something, can you run with it? They did a fantastic job.”

The department will hit the road this week to deliver the gifts to about 15 families and 50 children before Christmas. A member of the department will even dress up as Santa Claus.

Recycling

The Schuylkill County recycling program is nearing its end.

Many Schuylkill counties are looking for solutions. Sites in Port Carbon, Ashland and Girardville have already closed.

“We looked into recycling and met with the fire company on a couple of different occasions,” said board Chairman Tony Prudenti. “We looked at a site over there. The fire company brought it to their board and it was voted down. As of right now, we do not have a site for recycling. We have a couple other areas in the township we’re looking at.”

Closure dates

• Week of Dec. 21: Ringtown Borough, Butler Township.

• Week of Dec. 28: Hegins, Porter and Eldred townships

• Week of Jan. 4: Wayne, Pine Grove and Frailey townships

• Week of Jan. 11: Reilly, Branch, West Penn, Walker and Ryan townships

Other business

• Prudenti gave big kudos to township roadmaster Clint Schock and his team regarding last week’s winter storm.

“The guys worked over 24 hours straight through. I’ve gotten phone calls thanking us and the township for what a great job that you guys did,” Prudenti said during the meeting. “From the board of supervisors’ standpoint, you guys were unbelievable.”

• West Penn will hold its reorganization meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 4.

“I’d like to wish everyone happy holidays and I can’t thank everyone enough for what you all do for our community,” Prudenti said.
